A Guide to FPL Team Structure | 2024/25 FPL Season

FPL Team Structure refers to nothing but the orientation or the making of your FPL team based on positions, prices and formation. It is important to understand team structure while building your FPL team due to a variety of reason especially at the start of the season due to large number of unknown variables in the game. It is crucial to know your team structure due to a variety of reasons-

Importance of FPL Team Structure

  • Flexibility(Moving from one player/position/formation to another)
  • Reduce the number of Hits
  • Potential Routes to Highly owned EO players which you don’t own
  • Money in the Bank

Price Points and Players to Target:

FPL Team Structures

Haaland(£14.0) and Salah(£12.5) are priced as Tier 1- The most expensive players in the game. They are in a league of their own. So for the easy understanding and convenience of the article, the next set of expensive midfielders(Palmer, Saka, and Foden) are listed as Premium Midfielders. Gvardiol, TAA, and Arsenal Defenders are listed as Premium Defenders.

For the understanding of this blog we have divided this article into 6 Team structures built around them-

  • Haaland + Salah+ One/Two Premium Defenders
  • Haaland + Salah + One Premium Midfielder
  • No Haaland + (2 Premium Midfielders)+ Premium Defender
  • No Haaland + Salah+ 1 Premium Mid+ 2 Premium Defenders
  • No Salah+ Haaland+ 2/3 Premium Defenders
  • No Haaland, Salah

Note: The players mentioned here in the drafts are just a placeholder for the price points and need not be the best players.

Team Structure 1- Draft with Salah+ Haaland + Two Premium DEFs

FFHub AI Team Rating: 94% (Get your drafts rated for free using the FFHUB AI Team Rating tool)

  • This draft has both Haaland + Salah along with 2 Premium Defenders in TAA+ Gvardiol. This is one of the strongest and one of our personal favourite drafts.
  • This draft almost has the players at all important price points- £6.0 FWD, £8.5/9.0 FWD, £6.5/7.0 MID, £12.5 MID, £6.0-£7.0 DEF, £4.5 DEF.
  • In case you want to bring in Watkins later if he hits form- You can bring him in for Isak after his good fixtures. You can easily get to Saka and Arsenal Defenders in GW6 for their good fixtures in place of Salah and TAA/Gvardiol without wasting many transfers.
Arsenal fixtures from GW6-GW8
  • There will be a lot of £6.5 Midfielders emerging soon based on fixtures like Neto, Kudus, and Mitoma – You can easily get to them as well.
  • Switching to a 3-5-2 structure is also possible later if needed- Dropping Wood to a 4.5 striker and upgrading the 4.5 Midfielders to 5.5/6.0 Midfielder.

The main con of this draft is that there is a very weak bench in this draft with 2*(£4.0 DEFs) and one £4.5 Midfielder.

A slight variation of the above draft – One of the Premium Defenders dropping to a 4.5 Defender(Quansah/Aina) which allows you to upgrade 5.5 Midfielder(CHO/ESR) to Jota/Gordon as seen below. This team gets a 95% Team Rating on a Hub Rate my Team Tool. Instead of getting Jota, you can use the money to upgrade Wood to Solanke as well.

Team Structure 2- Draft with Salah+ Haaland + One Premium Midfielder

FFHub AI Team Rating: 91% (Get your drafts rated for free using the FFHUB AI Team Rating tool)

  • This is a team structure that accommodates Salah + Haaland + Along with a Premium Midfielder(Saka/Palmer/Foden)
  • Holding Haaland + Salah + Saka brings consistency to the team in terms of penalty-taking, minutes, and reliability.
  • Bailey and Nkunku are good placeholders(season start picks) for the £6.5 Midfielders price point. One of them can be upgraded to Gordon/Jota and the other one can be downgraded to 5.5 MID offering great flexibility. Rogers stands out as the Best Midfielder at £5.0 price point.

A slight modification of the above draft is replacing Bailey with Winks(4.5 Bench Fodder) and using Rogers as a starter. That money has been used to upgrade 6.0 Million striker to Solanke and improves the overall stability of the team to start the season.

The main con of this structure is that the Defense is weak in this draft and it is difficult to get to Arsenal/City Defenders and TAA later if needed. You will need to downgrade one of Isak/Premium Mid but both are premium investments, fixture-proof, and are better long-term investments.

Team Structure 3- No Haaland. Salah + Two Premium Mids + One Premium Defender

FFHub AI Team Rating: 93% (Get your drafts rated for free using the FFHUB AI Team Rating tool)

  • This is the Team structure with No Haaland along with Salah + Foden + Palmer(2 Premium Midfielders) setting up for a Blockbuster Midfield.
  • With no Haaland, there is literally enough money in the bank for everything- 3 Premium Midfielders + Semi Premium(Bruno) and also a Premium Defender.
  • Bruno can be downgraded to a Budget Midfielder(5.5) and that money can be used to upgrade Wood to Watkins later.
  • The major con of the draft is no Haaland or to be precise- The difficulty of getting back Haaland. You will need to sacrifice Salah along with a Premium Mid/Defender and that might still not be enough with price changes. It is simply too many transfers wasted.

Team Structure 4- No Haaland. Salah + One Premium Mid + Two Premium Defender

FFHub AI Team Rating: 97%

  • This is a team structure with No Haaland- Salah + One Premium Mid + Two Premium Defenders. A modification of the previous structure where a Premium Midfielder is replaced by a Premium Defender and AI likes this very much with a 97% rating on the Hub Rate my Team Tool.
  • Defense has cover from City, Arsenal, and Liverpool as well as with good attacking threat. So defense is a set and forget and very transfers need to be used there in the longer run.
  • Midfield also covers all the price points- £12.5, £9.5-10.5, £7.5, £6.5 which makes it really flexible.

Difficulty to get back Haaland is the obvious con in this draft but other than that, there is also added pressure and importance to get the 2nd Premium Midfielder- Saka vs Palmer vs Foden vs Son right. You could pick one of them and they could score 10 points from 4 games while the other pick can get 30+ points in that time. This is bound to happen in FPL but with no Haaland, it is a bigger problem.

Team Structure 5- No Salah. Haaland+ 2 Premium Mids + Premium DEF

FFHub AI Team Rating: 92% (Get your drafts rated for free using the FFHUB AI Team Rating tool)

  • This is a Team structure with No Salah– But it is compensated by 2 Premium Midfielders(Foden + Palmer) along with a Premium Defender
  • This draft has good overall balance and also a solid bench and also 0.5 in the bank for further moves.
  • You can also downgrade Bailey to a 5.5 Midfielder and upgrade Nkunku to a Eze/Gordon/Jota
  • There is a con with going No Salah not just with the price point but difficulty in decision-making if Salah gets a double-digit haul vs Ipswich in GW1- Whether to hold to the No Salah moto or get him soon for the other fixtures thereby dropping two premium picks(Palmer/Foden/Gvardiol).

Team Structure 6- No Haaland and Salah

Hub AI Team Rating: 93% (Get your drafts rated for free using the FFHUB AI Team Rating tool)

  • Looks really solid on paper with 7 good and proven attackers along with 2 Premium Defenders.
  • But Captaincy is a question whether the likes of Palmer, Saka, and Watkins can be considered strongly every week for captaincy. They are all good performers- But Haaland and Salah are more reliable for Captaincy as suggested by previously seasons and also the pricing.

FFHUB My Team Rating

Conclusion

  • Pricing has been done in a way that managers are very likely to go with 3 Defenders to start the season and go with the formations 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. We can see that 3-4-3 as the most preferred formation due to the availability of Budget attackers in the 6.0-6.5 million range.
  • There is excellent value in the 4.5 Million Defenders position with many defenders from the Top 8 teams there and also with decent attacking threat. Rotating 4.5 Defenders is a legit option(Read more: Best FPL Rotational Pairs and Combinations for 2024/25 FPL Season). Finding starting 4.0 million defenders are also not difficult.
  • Looking at these Team structures- Going with Haaland looks to be a more safe secure option mainly due to the high EO and also because of the difficulty to get to Haaland later in the season without using a Wildcard. Haaland is priced at £15.0 million and you would need to break your team to get to him later. He could also be £15.2 million in no time.
  • Going without both Haaland and Salah may look good on paper to start with, but you would need reliable captaincy picks in the long run. Not owning the likes of Salah in GW1, and Haaland in GW2 vs Ipswich when there will be lots of managers who have captained him it might be a difficult start if either of them go crazy.
  • Team Structure 1 and Team Structure 2 are our favourite right now due to the reliable and consistent performers. Also offers flexibility to other picks who did not make it.
  • At the moment, 6.0 FWD(Wood/Muniz) looks to be a better option than 6.0 or lesser Mids. Things could easily change in pre-season as well.
  • Gordon(£7.5), Jota and Eze(£7.0) look like great value picks to start the season and are slightly underpriced considering the previous season they had.
  • There is excellent value in the 6.5 Midfielder slot– Nkunku, Gibbs White, Kudus, Mitoma, Garnacho, etc. But picking the right midfielder is not very straightforward.
  • If you own Haaland + Salah- Surely you need to sacrifice 2 out of these 4 FPL favourite players from last season(Palmer, Saka, Foden, Watkins) if not 3 to have a good team structure.
  • Isak(£8.5) and Havertz(£8.0) come up at good price points and look like better picks than Midfielders in that range(Bruno and Odegaard) especially Isak considering he is on penalties as well.

There is no right or wrong team in FPL. This is just a Team structure guide and more like an open conversation to understand the structures better. Play your own game. Hope this article was useful, Good luck for the season!

  1. Love the article as that is how I structure my team. I tend to think in these asset breakpoints especially with the midfield slot. The 9.5 – 12.5 slot I actually combine and put Salah into the same slot. For draft purposes, I agree Salah 2.5 is big enough difference to be in own class. However, after the season starts Salah falls into the same slot as the others imo. The reason is that Salah even last year was not worth owning at that price point for significant parts of the season. Also you need to raise funds often by dropping Salah for similar performance. I tend to think about how many premium midfielders are worth being in the template at a given time as one of the main drivers in FPL strategy. Typically, it’s one or two being worth it inclusion. Son, Saka, and Salah all went through peaks and valleys.

The hard one I am trying to get your opinion on is Watkins (9) versus Odegaard / Bruno? These are close for evaluation if you have Haaland/Isak template. Aston Villa has second easiest fixtures according to things I am seeing online. However, most Haaland/Isak drafters seem to go with Odegaard / Bruno as enabler rather than Watkins. As much as I think Watkins numbers will drop due to xA regression to mean, it’s hard to not seeing Watkins as potentially better than the 8.5 mids. Thoughts?

    1. Work from home and earn a respectable $60k a week, which is amazing considering that a year ago I was unemployed in a terrible economy. I always give God praise for honouring me with these rules, and now it’s my duty to practise anticipatory compassion and share it with everyone. Likewise, GOOD LUCK.

  2. Love the article as the asset points is how I build my team structure and helps saves so many moves later. The only slight variation is that Salah after the draft goes into the same bucket as the 9.5-10.5. During the draft, I totally agree Salah and Haaland’s price difference means they are separate. After the season starts, Salah functions about the same as everyone in that range as you need to drop him for a similar performing 9.5-10.5 to raise funds. FPL template is driven by how many premium midfielders are worth a spot in the template as Son, Saka, and Salah all reached 200 last year but were worth owning or not owning at any particular time. I think usually at most 2 are worth owning at a given time so I make sure to have at least 1 slot 9.5 mid and above to ensure I have the team structure for it.

How do you rate Watkins 9.0 vs. Odegaard/Bruno? I tend to put Watkins in that comp rather than with premium midfielders. A lot of people have Haaland/Isak and have been picking Odegaard / Bruno for team structure. Aston Villa has the second easiest fixtures to start (only Arsenal week 2) and as much as i think Watkins will regress to the mean, I find it hard to believe that he won’t outscore the 8.5 mids. The drawback of course is 3 high cost forwards upsets team structure and keeps you from getting 2 premium mids if that ends up being the way to go. However, if Watkins starts off hot, how will people move to him other than dropping Isak? What’s your thought on Watkins for team structure?
