This article will focus on the impact of Scott McTominay’s absence from Man United’s team and also on the FPL worth of Bruno Fernandes, as the Scottish midfielder was recently operated on his groin injury which is expected to keep him out for at least 3-4 weeks. To study the impact, the numbers have been divided into 2 parts, ‘With McTominay’ and ‘Without McTominay’. ‘With McTominay’ category includes stats for the matches where Scott played for 45 minutes or more.

Manchester United’s issues with the midfield are not hidden from anyone. In the first game of the season, Pogba was played from the left, and McTominay – Fred pair started behind him with Fred as a holding midfielder and McTominay as a box-to-box midfielder. This setup allowed both Pogba and Bruno to excel, Pogba gave 4 assists in that game whereas Bruno Fernandes scored a hattrick.
Whenever McTominay has played with Fred in the midfield, the team has looked balanced as it freed Pogba from the defensive duties to a considerable extent. Since McTominay started featuring regularly, his late surges in the box have created many big chances for the players playing in the advanced positions as well as for himself. McTominay is considered as a hard-working midfielder, whenever he plays for 90 minutes, he covers more distance than most of his teammates. McTominay’s ability to recover and intercept gives a steady platform to man United’s attack. McTominay has ranked 3rd in the recoveries per 90 and 1st in interceptions per 90 for Man United in 20-21 season.
Without McTominay, it is very much evident that Man United’s midfield is handicapped and its cascading effects have negatively reflected in the team’s direct attacking output. While the 18-yard carries reduce by a third, overall goal creating actions as well as goals scored go down by nearly 30%.
Scott McTominay’s effect on entire Man United squad
McTominay’s absence has felt mainly by Bruno Fernandes and Fred, while Bruno Fernandes has to make up for the carries in the box and recoveries, Fred is usually left stranded to do all the defensive work on his own, and playing in a single pivot is far from being his strength, in fact, Fred’s performances have dipped massively when he has started without McTominay.
Now coming to Bruno Fernandes and his FPL prospects in McTominay’s absence, his FPL points per 90 minutes go down by nearly 50%, Goals per 90 suffer by 61%, total shots / 90 come down by a fourth.
Scott McTominay’s effect on Bruno Fernandes in FPL
In Scott McTominay’s absence, Bruno Fernandes has managed to score only 4 goals since the beginning of last season whereas 17 out of the 21 goals scored by him, were in presence of his Scottish midfield partner. All the major double-digit hauls from Fernandes which includes one 20 pointer and three 17 pointers came when Scott was on the pitch.
Scott McTominay’s effect on Bruno Fernandes in FPL
Scott McTominay has been side-lined for at least 1 month with a groin injury and he recently went under the knife for this recurring issue. The overall impact of the injury has already started showing up on the entire team as well as Bruno’s FPL output. Bruno has looked visibly frustrated in his last 2 games and he was yellow-carded in both the matches for showing dissent against the referee’s decisions. Fernandes has managed only 3 points from his last 2 games and has disappointed millions of FPL managers who trusted him with captain’s armband on the back of impressive performance against Leeds United.
With Ronaldo back to Old Trafford and Greenwood’s increased attacking output, we already have 2 great options for Fernandes. For someone priced at around 12.0m it might be best to look elsewhere for the next 2-3 gameweeks; but in any case, after gameweek 6, Man United have a series of difficult fixtures which includes Everton, Leicester, Liverpool, Spurs, and City in 5 back-to-back fixtures and then they play against Chelsea and Arsenal.
Having said this, like any other champion player we can expect Bruno to start scoring once again in near future, but for now, with so many premium FPL assets already in the game, you can surely look for other options by selling Fernandes in GW4.
