Chennai City FC returns to Chennai for AFC Cup home games.

Hero I-League defending champions Chennai City FC(CCFC) will play their first Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup game in Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Chennai.

This means that Chennai will host their first AFC Cup game on March 11th. Last season, Indian Super League(ISL) outfit Chennaiyin FC were forced to play their AFC Cup home games in EKA Arena(TranStadia), Ahmedabad.

Chennai City FC club President Rohit Ramesh confirmed that Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Coimbatore( where CCFC play their home I-League games) was their first choice venue but the venue didn’t meet the AFC norms. He also, added that the management will take care of the travel expenses of its fans clubs (Southerners and Roaring Lions) for the AFC Cup home games in Chennai.

How did Chennai City FC reach the AFC Cup?

Chennai City FC qualified for the AFC Champions League 1st Preliminary Round by winning the I-League last season. They were knocked out by Al Riffa, the Bahrain outfit in the first round as a result of which they are in group stages of AFC Cup 2020 now.

Who will Chennai City FC play against in AFC Cup 2020?

CCFC are drawn in Group E of the AFC Cup alongside Bashundhara Kings(Bangladesh), Maziya S&RC (Maldives), T.C. Sports Club (Maldives).

CCFC FC Home Fixtures for AFC Cup 2020:

  • Maziya- March 11(7.30 P.M)
  • Bashundhara Kings- April 29(7.30 P.M)
  • TC Sports- June 17(7.30 P.M)

Chennai City FC will play their first AFC Cup game against Maziya from Maldives on 11 March, 7:30 P.M IST. Tickets can be booked here starting from Rs.100 onwards.

Japan’s Katsumi Yusa, the in-form striker will fulfill the Asian foreign player quota, he will be amongst the four foreigners eligible in the tournament for the club. One of the key players last season Sandro Rodriguez, who is yet to feature for the club this season due to a cartilage injury to his right leg, is now fully fit and is likely to make the squad. The game will also present a chance for the Chennai crowd to witness local talents like Charles Anandraj, Jockson Dhas, Pravitto Raju and Ajith Kumar.
