FPL Gameweek 6 Transfer Tips: Players to Buy, Avoid, Sell & Hold

Welcome Back, FPL Managers!

If you are reading this, give yourself a pat on the back. We survived. Almost three weeks without FPL. Three. Whole. Weeks. No agonising over captaincy, no checking whether your midfielder got a mysterious 1-pointer, no staring at the bench wondering why the 4.5m defender you benched scored 12 points. The longest international break of the season is finally behind us, and, more importantly, FPL is back! After what felt like an eternity, we can finally get back to the things that truly matter in life โ€“ transfers, xGI, expected points, captaincy dilemmas and blaming luck for ruining our carefully planned gameweek.

And what a three weeks it has been in the football world.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to create yet another international saga, abruptly leaving the Portugal camp after tensions with Jorge Jesus and leaving everyone wondering whether we have just witnessed the beginning of the end of his extraordinary international career.
  • Then there is poor old Vinicius Jr, whose recent struggles have apparently become so difficult to explain that social media has gone one step further and started suggesting that the real Vinicius has been replaced by a body double! Yes, this is an actual conspiracy theory doing the rounds โ€“ apparently sparked by differences in his tattoos and appearance. It is, of course, nonsense, but the fact that the internet has reached body-double territory tells you something about how dramatically the perception of Vinicius’ form has changed.
  • But nothing โ€“ absolutely nothing โ€“ compares to the earthquake that has hit English football: Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial-rule charges brought against them. The independent commission found that City used sham commercial arrangements, misstated accounts and concealed the true state of their finances over a nine-season period.

And this is where things get really interesting. The guilty verdict itself is only โ€œAct Oneโ€. The punishment is still to come, with possibilities ranging from a massive points deduction and fines all the way to expulsion from the Premier League. City have already appealed the verdict, so this story is far from over. But imagine the footballing chaos if titles from the affected period are eventually stripped. Do those Premier League trophies simply disappear from history, or are they handed to the teams that finished second? Suddenly, we could be rewriting the CVs of some very familiar managers. Josรฉ Mourinho could potentially find another Premier League title appearing on his rรฉsumรฉ from the 2017-18 season, while Ole Gunnar Solskjรฆr could theoretically be credited with the 2020-21 title. Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United could all find themselves revisiting seasons they thought were long forgotten. And what about the players? The records? The Champions League places? The financial compensation claims from rival clubs? The ramifications could stretch far beyond Manchester.

So, while the lawyers, accountants and football administrators get ready for what could be one of the biggest regulatory battles in Premier League history, we have more immediate problems to solve. Which players survived the international break? Who has lost his place? Who has suddenly become essential? Who are we buying? And, most importantly, who gets the armband?

Welcome back, everyone. GW6 starts here.

FPL GW6 Transfer Tips: Players to BUY

James Tarkowski (ยฃ6.2m) โ€“ DEF, Everton โ€“ 16.7% TSB

FPL GW6 Transfer Tips: Players to BUY - Tarkowski

Tarkowski has quietly become one of the most reliable FPL assets this season, and I think he deserves far more attention than he is currently getting. He is already second among all players for total FPL points, while comfortably sitting at the top of the defender rankings.

The biggest reason is simple โ€“ he is playing in arguably the leagueโ€™s best defence right now. Everton have conceded the fewest goals in the league and kept the most clean sheets, making their defenders extremely attractive from an FPL perspective. Tarkowski, in particular, also has the added appeal of picking up defensive contribution points and bonus points.

This week, the fixture is about as inviting as you could ask for, with Hull ranked only 17th for xG. That makes an Everton clean sheet a very realistic outcome, rather than something we are merely hoping for. Give Tarkowski a clean sheet and add a couple of defensive contribution points, and he could already be sitting on a very healthy return. Throw in the possibility of bonus points โ€“ or even a rare attacking contribution โ€“ and a double digit haul is well within his range. For me, he is one of the clearest buys going into GW6.

Josh King (ยฃ5.5m) โ€“ MID, Fulham โ€“ 2.7% TSB

FPL GW6 Transfer Tips: Players to BUY - Josh King

One player Iโ€™m increasingly tempted by as we come out of the international break is Josh King. Heโ€™s hardly the first name that comes to mind when you think about midfielders to target, but that may actually be the attraction. Look beyond the ownership numbers and there is a very interesting story developing. King has been getting himself into dangerous positions with remarkable regularity โ€“ 37 touches in the opposition box in the first five GWs, more than anyone else in the league. Thatโ€™s not a random hot streak either.

King is one of the seven attackers with over 0.4 xGI so far this season (Under 10% ownership)

During Fulhamโ€™s tougher fixture run, in his first 5 GWs (and comparison to more popular FPL picks):

  • 14 shots (GroรŸ has 10 for context)
  • 7 on target (Bruno has 5 for context)
  • 11 in the box (Rogers has 8 for context)
  • 2.00 xG (Semenyo has 1.50 for context)
  • 24 FPL points (Szoboszlai has 20 for context)

The really interesting part is that the fixtures are now about to start working in his favour. Fulham have three promoted sides coming up in successive gameweeks, and that could provide the perfect environment for King to turn all that promising underlying activity into goals and assists. Iโ€™m always wary of chasing a player simply because the fixtures look good, but this feels different โ€“ the fixtures are improving at precisely the point when the underlying numbers are already giving us plenty of encouragement. At a time when most managers will naturally gravitate towards the obvious midfield names, King gives us an opportunity to take a slightly different route.

FPL Gameweek 6 Transfer Tips: Players to AVOID

Brian Brobbey (ยฃ5.7m) โ€“ FWD, Sunderland โ€“ 6.9% TSB

FPL Gameweek 6 Transfer Tips: Players to AVOID - Brobbey

Brian Brobbey is currently the second most-transferred-in forward this week, which is hardly surprising after his sensational 17-point haul against Manchester City. After four consecutive blanks, the Dutchman finally exploded with a hat-trick at the Etihad and suddenly became one of the most popular names in the transfer market.

The problem? Almost 200,000 managers seem to have missed the tiny yellow flag next to his name. Brobbey picked up a hamstring injury while on international duty with the Netherlands, lasting only 35 minutes against Germany before being forced off. He subsequently withdrew from the Dutch squad and, as things stand, there is no confirmed return date.

Brobbey’s hamstring injury is reportedly serious

Even if Brobbey somehow recovers in time to feature, I still wouldn’t be rushing to bring him in. His GW6 opponent is Brighton, who have been among the strongest defensive sides in the league and have already accumulated the most clean sheets. More importantly, we don’t need to take a fitness gamble on a ยฃ5.7m forward when there are plenty of other options available. The temptation is understandable โ€“ 17 points and a hat-trick will do that to FPL managers โ€“ but this is exactly the kind of situation where we need to separate the last result from the next decision. Don’t chase the points, don’t gamble on the hamstring, and don’t buy a player simply because everyone else is buying him. Brobbey is an easy AVOID for me in GW6.

FPL GW6 Transfer Tips: Players to SELL

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (ยฃ6.0m) โ€“ FWD, Leeds โ€“ 24.8% TSB

FPL GW6 Transfer Tips: Players to SELL - Dominic Calvert Lewin

Leeds are becoming a team I would be very keen to move away from in FPL, with their fixture run now looking particularly unappealing. They rank 20th on the FDR over the next six Gameweeks, with Arsenal, Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea all waiting in that spell. That is a pretty brutal sequence for a team whose assets we are largely buying for attacking returns. At this price point, I don’t see much reason to hold and hope that Leeds somehow navigate that run.

FDR from FFHUB

There are simply better routes to take with your transfers. For example, Gonzalo Garcia at Fulham is one name I much prefer, with a considerably kinder fixture run and the potential to offer better value at the same price point. If you’re sitting on a Leeds asset, this feels like the right moment to cash out. Don’t wait for the difficult fixtures to hurt your rank before making the move.

Dominik Szoboszlai (ยฃ6.9m) โ€“ MID, Liverpool โ€“ 32.7% TSB

FPL GW6 Transfer Tips: Players to SELL - Dominik Szoboszlai

From Dominic to Dominik. The pre-season hype around Szoboszlai was completely understandable. A nailed-on starter for Liverpool, priced at just ยฃ7.0m, with set-piece responsibility and penalty duties โ€“ it looked like FPL had handed us a midfielder with multiple routes to points on a silver platter. He even started exactly as we hoped, scoring 8 points in GW1. Since then, though, the returns have been distinctly less exciting: just 12 points across the following four Gameweeks. He now sits on 20 points for the season, with 30 midfielders scoring more points than him, while 25 of them are cheaper or similarly priced.

The bigger issue is that the ยฃ7m price tag is starting to look like the problem rather than the bargain it seemed in August. Yes, Szoboszlai is extremely secure for minutes and still has penalties and set pieces in his locker, but FPL isn’t a game where being nailed is enough โ€“ we need points to justify the slot. And the immediate fixture doesn’t exactly scream โ€œhold and hopeโ€, with Liverpool hosting an unbeaten Manchester City side in GW6. City have started the season without dropping a point, making this one of the toughest possible fixtures to back a relatively low-output midfielder. Add the fact that Szoboszlai has already fallen to ยฃ6.9m, and there is very little reason to be sentimental about the original ยฃ7.0m investment. For me, this is a classic case of a player who looked like an obvious pre-season pick but has now become expendable. Sell, move the money into a midfielder with greater xPts upside, and don’t let the GW1 points keep you invested in a GW6 problem.

FPL GW6 Transfer Tips: Players to HOLD

Yoane Wissa (ยฃ6.2m) โ€“ FWD, Newcastle โ€“ 18.7% TSB

FPL GW6 Transfer Tips: Players to HOLD - Wissa

Wissa is among the Top 3 forwards being transferred out this GW, and honestly, I find that a little strange. Newcastle have one of the most favourable fixtures this week, facing promoted Coventry, who currently sit 18th in the league table.

The Coventry defence certainly doesn’t inspire much confidence either. They rank:

  • 19th for shots conceded
  • 17th for goals conceded
  • 15th for xCS

That looks like exactly the kind of fixture where you would want your Newcastle attackers involved. So if you already own Wissa, I see absolutely no reason to jump ship this week. At the same time, I wouldn’t recommend bringing him in either, especially with other forwards offering more compelling options. Wissa is therefore the classic FPL No Buy-No Sell. Hold if you own him, but don’t go out of your way to acquire him.
