Welcome to our FPL GW5 Scout Picks blog! Though it may feel like FPL is only just getting started, FPL GW5 is the final week of Premier League football before the elongated International Break (which lasts for three weeks). Many managers will be choosing to play their Wildcard Chip in GW6 in order to maximise the break between GWs and to give them more time to think about potential drafts, players and chip strategies… Regardless of your plans this Gameweek, we’re confident that our FPL GW5 Scout Picks will be of use to all managers!

FPL GW5 Scout Picks
FPL GW5 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

Raya (6.0m) keeps his spot in the team for Arsenal’s trip to Brighton this weekend. Brighton are the highest scoring team in the league this season (13) and are the team that has created the most expected goals (10.78xG). Based on their underlying numbers they are well worth their 13 goals, and Hurzeler’s system is creating more than enough chances for the forwards at the moment. While their goal scoring form is impressive, they have played two of the sides that sit in the bottom 5 for goals conceded (Chelsea and Coventry), information which should certainly be kept in mind…

Arsenal on the other hand have the best defensive record in the league, having conceded just 1 goal and kept clean sheets in 4/5 matches thus far. The gunners have been somewhat fortunate however, as their xGA sits at around 3.34, suggesting that they should have perhaps conceded one or two more. Raya has come to the rescue on a number of occasions and did so in GW4 against Sunderland, saving a penalty to keep the clean sheet and securing a huge 14 point haul for owners!
The game against Brighton is a tough one, but, as with the Chelsea fixture a few weeks ago, Arsenal’s clean sheet odds remain high and the effective ownership on their defensive assets is such that it would be naive to go without at least one of them.

FPL GW5 Scout Picks – Defenders

We’ve selected a back line of Gvardiol (5.7m), Munoz (5.4m) and Muharemovic (5.0m) for GW5…
Gvardiol comes into the scout picks team for FPL GW5 following a haul against United in GW4. In the derby, the croatian provided the assist for Haaland’s winning goal and picked up both CS points and 3 bonus points. Gvardiol has not yet blanked in FPL, picking up 1 goal, 2 assists and 2 clean sheets (and 6 bonus points) across his first 4 fixtures of the season. Over the summer Maresca ordained him as one of the ‘central pillars’ of this new man city team, and he is certainly nailed in that city backline which automatically makes him an attractive option moving forwards.

FACT: Gvardiol has the highest predicted points amongst defenders for FPL GW5 (FFH)
This weekend City face Sunderland, a side that sit in the bottom 5 for goals scored and are really struggling to convert their chances at the moment, in a fixture which boasts high CS potential. Maresca’s side will surely be buoyed by the victory over City last weekend too! Gvardiol is clearly the best City defensive asset due to his security of minutes and attacking potential and this weekend offers a great ‘jumping on’ point for City defenders!
Munoz comes into the team for the ‘all-midlands’ clash of Forest v Coventry this weekend. The Colombian looked assured in his first start for Forest in GW4 and seems to be playing a very similar role to that of his time at at Crystal Palace under Glasner. The wingback created 4 chances, 1 big chance and took 1 shot from close range across the 90 minutes against Villa and was unlucky to come away without an attacking return – he’ll surely fancy his chances against a Coventry side that are second bottom of the table for both goals scored and goals conceded! The Coventry game is the fixture to target this weekend considering both sides’ respective form and the haul potential of some of the Forest assets.

Muharemovic comes back into the side for Leeds’ home game against Palace in GW5. Muharemovic was on lots of managers’ radar prior to the season due to his high potential as a DefCon asset. Last year in the Seria A Muharemovic put up 10.9 DC per 90 for a mid-table Sassuolo side. Furthermore, he was slotting into a Leeds backline that often scored highly for DC last year which made him an even more exciting prospect. So far he’s lived up to expectations, scoring 4+ points in all of his games so far and scoring DC points in all but one. GW4 also saw him return his first attacking contribution with an assist – which is also always nice to see!
This weekend Leeds take on Palace, a side that rank within the lower mid-table for attacking stats. While their goalscoring form has picked up in the last couple of weeks (scoring 2 against Ipswich in GW4 and 3 against Fulham in GW3), these performances have come against sides that are towards the bottom end of the table for defensive stats. Leeds on the other hand have conceded 1 goal in all of their last 3 games following their CS in GW1 and have looked defensively solid across the start of the season. With solid CS potential and high DC odds Muharemovic looks like a solid pick for GW5.

FPL GW5 Scout Picks – Midfielders

Gibbs-White (8.0m), Bruno Fernandes (12.0m), Rogers (7.7m) and Dewsbury-Hall (6.5m) make up our midfield for FPL GW5…
MGW comes into the team for Forest’s attractive fixture against Coventry. As mentioned in the previous section, this is a game to target Forest assets as Coventry are struggling in all departments at the moment. Lampard’s side are winless having conceded 10 and scored 0 in their first 4 Premier league games. Forest on the other hand picked up their first win of the season in GW4 with a victory over Villa and are unbeaten in their last 3 premier league matches.
Gibbs-White is a fantastic FPL asset who’s stock has drastically increased this season due to Glasner’s system and his position in it. The englishman has scored 2 and assisted 1 so far this season and is showing himself to be Forest’s most consistent attacker yet again. Playing just behind the striker and with the license to crash into the box, MGW is averaging 0.74xGI/90 so far this campaign, the highest of his career. If you’re looking for a cheaper pick then Ndoye is a great asset at just 5.5m, but has far fewer routes to points than MGW and is far less consistent (though he is fairly secure to start).

Bruno Fernandes comes into the team for United’s game against Fulham this weekend. In spite of his back-to-back blanks in FPL we still think that Bruno is an excellent option for this round of fixtures due to Fulham’s defensive vulnerabilities and Bruno’s consistent chance creation. Fulham have the third worst xGA in the league and have conceded 3 goals in 2/4 of their games so far. Bruno on the other hand continues to take shots and create chances in spite of United’s under performance. Wirtz, who occupies similar positions to Bruno, created 2 chances and took 3 shots against Fulham in GW4 – there will be space and time for Bruno in this game, it’s just a question of how the rest of the team performs…

Bruno Fernandes Rank among Midfielders this season:
- Shots- 1st
- Shots on Target- 4th
- Big Chances- 3rd
- xG- 3rd
- xGI- 1st
- Chances created- 8th
- Goal Involvements- 2nd
Rogers keeps his spot in the team for Chelsea’s game against Brentford in GW5. Rogers returned again in GW4, picking up his fourth goal involvement in as many games in the PL and picking up 1 bonus point in Chelsea’s disappointing draw with Hull. With Joao Pedro having pulled out of the Brazil squad through injury for the upcoming international break Rogers looks like the go to Chelsea asset for this round of fixtures. That being said, if JP is indeed injured then that surely renders both Rogers and Palmer less attractive options as the trio play off each other so well…

FACT: Rogers has the highest expected assists per 90 numbers in the Chelsea squad (0.45xA/90) but has picked up just 1 assist so far!
This weekend Chelsea play a Brentford side who have drawn all 3 of their previous premier league matches. Furthermore, in their previous two games Brentford have conceded over 2xGA, suggesting that they are giving away lots of chances to opposition teams and have been lucky to get away with draws. Chelsea are a clinical side with three in-form forwards (one of whom is likely injured) and will surely profit from Brentford’s recent defensive form.
Finally we have Everton’s Dewsbury-Hall. Everton have an attractive fixture against Ipswich this weekend and KDH is a great FPL asset for the game due to his minutes security and diverse point scoring avenues. So far this season KDH has put up over 0.2xGI in all of his 4 matches and has picked up 1 goal involvement. The englishman has scored over 10 DC on 2 occasions but not yet reached the midfield threshold of 12 and has helped Everton to two clean sheets in the process.

KDH is predicted the third most points amongst midfielders in FPL in GW5 (FFH) and is averaging around 4.25 points per game so far this campaign which is just under his average last year of 4.87. In many ways he’s a cut priced Szoboszlai, offering the occasional DC and bonus points, the odd goal involvement and CS points – with Everton’s wingers failing to impress thus far we think that KDH is the best Everton midfield option to target for those looking to profit from their positive fixture run over the next few matches.

FPL GW5 Scout Picks – Forwards

Haaland (15.5m), Barry (5.6m) and Delap (5.5m) complete the team…
Haaland naturally keeps his spot in the team for City’s game against Sunderland. His pick needs no justification. The robot has scored 4 goals in his last 3 games and continues to put up ridiculously high underlying numbers. New season, new manager, same Haaland. His 0.86xG/90 this season is coloured somewhat by City going down to 10 men in their previous fixture against United, I’d expect Haaland to accrue around 1xG against Sunderland in GW5, in spite of their valiant performance in GW4. Haaland has the highest predicted points for GW5 according to Fantasy Football Hub’s predicted points tool, and even with Foden suspended, City have more than enough attacking talent to support Haaland – he’s a must have for FPL GW5.
FACT: Haaland and Joao Pedro are the joint highest scoring forwards in FPL this season

Barry comes into the team for Everton’s game against Ipswich. The Toffee’s striker continues to put up excellent underlying numbers and get into fantastic, goal scoring positions but is lacking that cutting edge somewhat. So far this season Barry has averaged 0.79xG/90 (the highest in the Everton squad) but has scored just one goal in the league, well below his expected goals of 2.92. The french forward takes close to 4 shots per 90 which is great for a forward at that price point in FPL and Everton create more than enough chances for him but his finishing is starting to become something of a concern…
With little pressure on him following the exit of Beto in the summer, hopefully with time Barry will become more settled and will refind his scoring boots. In the meantime, the underlying data is really good and he is a perfect fit for this Everton team. The goals will come, it’s just a question of when. With Ipswich up next, a side that have conceded the second most goals so far in the league, GW5 is the perfect opportunity for Barry to get back on the score sheet and return some FPL points!
Finally we have Forest’s Delap. As mentioned in previous sections, Forest’s fixture against Coventry is certainly one to target for a number of reasons. Coventry’s capitulation at home against Brighton in GW4 was certainly worrying for fans of the club, and Forest will be keen to build upon their first win of the season in GW4. Forest are still without a win at home, and the fans will know that his game is a great opportunity to finally get some points on the board at the City ground.

FACT: Delap took the most shots and had the joint most touches in the opposition box of any player against Villa in GW4
Delap played his first 90 for Forest against Villa in GW4 and marked the occasion with a goal! In that game Delap took 6 shots (0.63xG total) and created 1 chance. He missed 1 big chance, with his goal coming from outside the box on the 46th minute. Mateta was a prolific goalscorer for Glasner at Palace despite not being a high volume shot taker, if Delap can continue to put up 4+ shots per 90 in this forest team then he could become a really interesting FPL asset in the long term, particularly at such a low price point!
