FPL GW4 Scout Picks Based on Stats, Analysis and Matchups

Welcome to our FPL GW4 Scout Picks blog! The first two gameweeks of the new season were something of a rollercoaster for the FPL community but thankfully GW3 reverted back to a semi-normal set of results and returns. But what does the impact of European football mean for FPL? Who will Maresca rotate out of the side for Man City this week? And what of Villa – who looked so good in mid-week but are still yet to score in the Premier League!? Regardless of your plans this Gameweek, we’re confident that our FPL GW4 Scout Picks will be of use to all managers!

Our AllAboutFPL Scout Picks picked up a decent score of 60 points in FPL GW3, drawing with the Official Scout Picks’ score of 60. That means it’s all square again ahead of FPL GW4…

FPL GW4 Scout Picks

FPL GW4 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

fpl gw4 scout picks goalkeeper

Raya (6.0m) comes in as our goalkeeper pick for FPL GW4 due to Arsenal’s excellent defensive record and attractive fixture against Sunderland. The Gunners came out on top against free scoring Chelsea in GW3, conceding just the one goal and demonstrating why they are Premier League champions with a truly dominant display. This weekend Arteta’s side faces Sunderland, a side that have scored 1 goal in all of their matches so far this season…

FACT: Raya is the second highest scoring goalkeeper in FPL

The Chelsea game in GW3 was certainly Arsenal’s most challenging (from a CS perspective) of their opening run. While the gunners did concede for the first time this season against Chelsea they actually only conceded 0.48xGA in that game – less than they conceded against Coventry in GW1! In all three of their matches so far Arsenal have conceded well under 1xGA of chances, a stat which illustrates how defensively solid they are and how high their CS potential is regardless of opponent.

FPL GW4 Scout Picks – Defenders

fpl gw4 scout picks defenders

Calafiori (5.6m), Vuskovic (5.0m) and De Cuyper (4.7m) make up our back three for our FPL GW4 Scout Picks team…

Calafiori picks himself at this point. The Italian is a nailed starter for Arsenal at LB, offering a secure way into the best defence in the league at a very reasonable price. With Timber’s return on the horizon and Konsa’s minutes perhaps less secure than they could be, Calafiori is by far the best Arsenal defender to target moving forwards. Calafiori was unlucky not to add to his 2 goal involvements in GW3 and had a goal ruled out early on in the match – his attacking potential also makes him an attractive asset.

FACT: Calafiori has the third highest xGI/90 of any Arsenal player (0.64xGI/90) after three matches behind only Saka and Odegaard

Vuskovic and De Cuyper come into the defence for FPL GW4 due to Brighton’s very attractive fixture against Coventry. Brighton have kept 1 clean sheet in 3 matches so far, shutting Villa out in their stunning 4-0 victory in GW1. Since then the seagulls conceded 3 to Chelsea in GW2 and just 1 against Leeds in GW3. Coventry, Brighton’s opponents for GW3, are yet to score in the Premier League and failed to create over 1xG of chances in 2/3 of their matches so far. Brighton’s CS odds for this weekend are high, but why have we selected Vuskovic and De Cuyper?

Vuskovic is a great FPL asset due to his high Defensive Contribution (DC) numbers and his decent attacking potential – both of which he demonstrated in GW3 against Leeds! In the Bundesliga last season Vuskovic averaged 12.5 DC per 90, well above the 10 necessary in FPL to score DC points, and while DC is as much about system as it is about personnel, this was a good sign and made him a popular asset going into GW1. In his last two matches the croatian defender has managed 8 and then 10 defensive contributions. Furthermore, in the Bundesliga last season Vuskovic scored 6 goals and averaged 1 every 4.5 games. A threat from set-pieces and a DC monster, Vuskovic is a great pick for GW4.

De Cuyper also finds his way into our FPL GW4 scout picks side for the obvious reasons… The Belgian defender has been playing as a left winger for Brighton so far this season due to injuries in their attack and has deputised very very well! So far the ‘defender’ has provided 2 assists and scored one goal for Brighton, picking up a huge 21 points – an average of 7 per game! De Cuyper is averaging 0.51xG/90 and 0.19xA/90 as well as creating 5 chances and 1 big chance across his first 3 matches. His position as a winger is only temporary – so let’s make the most of it while we still can!

Brighton have high CS odds in this one, so selecting two of their defenders is preferable on a WC or FH – Vuskovic gives you the best DC potential, while De Cuyper’s haul potential is sky high as he’s playing out of position as an attacker. If you can only pick one I’d probably lean towards De Cuyper, as I doubt Coventry will offer enough in an attacking sense to secure DC points for Vuskovic, but both are truly great options!

FPL GW4 Scout Picks – Midfielders

fpl gw4 scout picks midfielders

We’ve selected a midfield four of Gomez (5.0m), Palmer (9.6m), Rogers (7.6m) and Szoboszlai (7.0m) for our FPL GW4 Scout Picks team…

Gomez vs Grob is an interesting dilemma for managers on a free hit or wildcard this week but we’ve gone for Gomez for the following reasons… First and foremost, Gomez’ underlying attacking numbers are better than Grob – Grob’s 0.64xGI/90 compared to Gomez’ 0.76xGI/90 is a substantial swing and should certainly be taken into account. While Grob has averaged more PPG than Gomez thus far (5.3 vs 4.3), and I do think that Grob is the better long term pick, Gomez offer explosive attacking potential in a way that Grob just doesn’t. Gomez’ more aggressive attacking position makes him a more attractive candidate for this fixture.

Most Shots among Midfielders this season:

  • Bruno Fernandes- 15
  • Gomez- 12
  • Enciso- 12
  • Palmer- 12
  • Mbeumo- 11

Next up is the Chelsea duo Palmer and Rogers. Tripling up on Chelsea attackers is a must on a free hit in FPL GW4 due to the huge haul potential of the Blues forwards in this fixture. While Hull have not yet conceded a goal in the league this season they have been putting up some pretty poor underlying defensive numbers which would suggest that they will start conceding sooner or later. In all of their games so far Hull have conceded well over an xG worth of chances, and they can’t keep riding their luck forever!

FPL midweek returns

Chelsea on the other hand have demonstrated so far this season that they will be an attacking force to be reckoned with in the 26/27 campaign, in large part thanks to their attacking trio of Palmer, Pedro and Rogers. The duo of Palmer and Rogers ran riot in mid-week against Leeds in the cup, coming out 6-3 winners after going two goals behind in the early stages. The Englishmen came on at half time and provided a combined 5 goal involvements between them! It’s so hard to choose between the duo/trio as they’ve all been in such fantastic form – so we’re not, we’re selecting both for our FPL GW4 Scout Picks team!

Finally we’ve got Liverpool’s Szoboszlai. While we would have preferred Gakpo or even Barcola a few days ago, injury issues with both players means that we’re reverting to Szoboszlai for Liverpool’s attractive fixture against Fulham in FPL GW4. The Hungarian has averaged 5 points per match so far this season, showing why he was such a popular FPL asset going into the campaign by scoring DC, attacking contributions and CS points across the first three matches. At just 7.0m Szoboszlai remains an absolute steal in terms of value!

gakpo injury news

Due to the injury concerns surrounding Liverpool’s other attackers, their attacking prospects are lower than they would have been going into this fixture, but this match against Fulham still presents a good opportunity to stock up on Liverpool assets due to Fulham’s poor defensive record. I would expect this game to be somewhat of a Basketball game, so Szoboszlai also offers the potential for DC points and bonus points if he is unable to get in on the attacking action! Wirtz could also be considered for our teams as the German has been in good form in the last couple of games and has a higher attacking ceiling than Szoboszlai, but we’ve gone for the latter due to his versatility and consistency of points scoring.

FPL GW4 Scout Picks – Forwards

fpl gw4 scout picks forwards

Our frontline is made up of Haaland (15.5m), Joao Pedro (7.7m) and Isak (9.1m)…

Haaland is pretty much nailed in our FPL Scout Picks teams every week, but there was some debate about including him this time around due to a tricky (on paper) fixture against cross-town-rivals Manchester United. City looked good against Coventry in GW3 but failed to deliver on the huge hauls that were promised from players like Foden, Cherki and Haaland (who many of us triple captained). That being said, in spite of rotation concerns, City attackers remain attractive prospects for the long term, and Semenyo, Cherki and Haaland are probably the picks of the bunch at this point.

expected goals fpl

United, City’s opponents this weekend, have conceded 6 goals across their first 3 matches in the league, conceding 2 in every single one of their opening fixtures. This suggests that their defence is not as solid as we might have expected… The Red Devils also conceded well over an xG worth of chances in both of their games against the two promoted sides (Hull and Ipswich) in gameweeks 1 and 2, which only strengthens the argument that Haaland should be a lock in our teams for this one. Haaland also is much less of a rotation concern than City’s other attackers due to the complete lack of alternative ‘striker’ options at Maresca’s disposal, making him the prime candidate for FPL GW4.

Joao Pedro comes back into the team for Chelsea’s great fixture against Hull at home in GW4. The brazilian was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s game against Leeds in mid-week, which only strengthens his starting prospects for FPL GW4. The forward has formed an electric trio with new signing Rogers and superstar Palmer this season and is the third highest scoring forward in FPL behind Haaland and Isak.

As mentioned above, Hull’s underlying numbers are concerning, and I wouldn’t be put off by their clean sheet/GA record thus far – while their system protects the backline and promotes last-ditch defending, it is not sustainable and could certainly come undone against one of the most exciting front-lines in the league. While Palmer and Rogers both have 3 goal involvements to their names so far JP is one ahead on 4 having provided twice and scored twice in Chelsea’s opening 3 games. After a quiet evening against Arsenal last weekend JP will be keen to get back on the scoresheet this time around!

Finally we have Liverpool’s Alexander Isak. The Red’s face ‘pointless’ Fulham in GW4 in what is a very attractive fixture from a Liverpool perspective due to Fulham’s poor defensive record. The Cottagers have conceded 7 goals in 3 games so far, the joint third most, and have the third worst xGA record in the league. Fulham’s new boss seems to be struggling to organise a solid enough defensive unit, and the huge squad overhaul is seemingly only making his job harder…

Following his 2 goals last weekend against Ipswich Isak looked lively against Atleti in mid-week but failed to get on the score-sheet in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory. Isak is so far averaging 0.89xG/90 which is one of the highest in the league and surely makes him a prime transfer target for FPL managers going into this fixture against a leaky Fulham side. These high underlying numbers are likely to drop off, but Isak looks more like his old self again after a tough season last season. Like last week, Isak remains a great option in FPL for GW4!
