In spite of a high scoring GW across the board, a section of managers are preaching the necessity of an early WC with many selecting GW3 as the perfect opportunity. A larger group have decided that GW3 is the best use of the Triple captain chip, with Haaland in good form, fully rested and City facing Coventry at home. FPL GW3 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper
Kelleher (5.0m) is our FPL GW3 Scout Picks goalkeeper. Brentford have been a pleasant surprise so far this season, over performing the middling to low expectations that many punters had prior to GW1. Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth are a special set of teams who we always think are going to ‘fall off’ after a great year, only for them all to incrementally improve. It’s like we always forget that all three are simply really well run clubs… The Bees conceded 0.76xG (0 goals) against Spurs in GW1 and 1.61xG (1 goal) in GW2. Importantly, in that second match they conceded just 1 big chance (the goal which DCL scored), and outside of that conceded just 1 shot on target and 0.84xG from shots mostly from outside of the box.
FACT: Kelleher is the 5th highest scoring ‘keeper after GW2
Sunderland on the other hand, Brentford’s opponents for FPL GW3, have somewhat underwhelmed thus far. While they looked alright in their second game against Fulham, they really struggled against Ipswich in GW1, failing to create much of note against a promoted side which went on to concede 5 to Manchester United in GW2. Sunderland don’t create a lot of chances, illustrated by the fact that they finished last season with the third lowest xG in the league, and Brentford have proved to be a good defensive unit so far this campaign, so we’re backing Kelleher to pick up some points in FPL GW3!
FPL GW3 Scout Picks – Defenders
Calafiori (5.6m), Kayode (4.6m) and Virgil (6.5m) make up our backline for our FPL GW3 Scout Picks team…
Califiori keeps his spot in the AAFPL Scout Picks team for FPL GW3 in spite of Arsenal’s challenging fixture against an in form Chelsea side. The Italian is the joint-highest scoring defender in FPL pre-GW3 having picked up a huge 20 points across his first two fixtures this season. The LB is a nailed option in an Arsenal backline that is once again proving itself to be a robust unit. Furthermore, Calafiori offers a high level of attacking output – both he and White occupied extremely advanced positions in the left and right half spaces when Arsenal were in possession against Villa in GW2.
While Konsa will be a popular pick going into GW3 due to the injury concerns around Mosquera (which Arteta subsequently dispelled, but with Arteta you never know!), both Calafiori and White represent great value at 5.6m and 5.5m respectively due to their high attacking potential and security of minutes. Chelsea are a tough opponent, but considering effective ownership it would be crazy to go without at least one Arsenal defensive asset…
Kayode comes into the team for FPL GW3 following a mixed start to the season for the Brentford defender. The Italian has shown himself to be a capable attacking fullback for Brentford across his time at the club, and demonstrated this excellently in GW1 with a wonderful performance against Spurs. In that game Kayode took 4 shots (0.5xG) and scored – in GW2 he failed to bag an attacking return, but did create one chance (0.21xA).
For all the reasons listed in the goalkeeper section Kayode is a great asset this week (favourable fixture against Sunderland), but we also like the look of him for his attacking potential. Ajer could also be considered as a safer DC option, though his DC ceiling is lower against Sunderland than it was against Spurs and Leeds.
Finally we have Liverpool’s captain Virgil Van Dijk. Liverpool’s defence has been shaky to say the least over the first two games of the new season, conceding two to Newcastle and two to Forest. Admittedly, against Forest the Reds looked a bit more solid, conceding one goal from a long ball and a spot of miscommunication and one from a penalty. This LFC defence is not yet as solid as it could/should be, but with time Iraola will surely be able to implement his system and get this team up and running.
Liverpool face Ipswich away in FPL GW3, and while Ipswich have scored 4 goals across their first 2 matches in the Premier League we think that VVD still represents great value in FPL for this match. Virgil’s appeal comes from his versatility of point scoring – the LFC captain scored 8 goals and provided 3 assists in all competitions last season as well as scoring 30 DC points and 10 bonus points across Liverpool’s premier league campaign. Despite their difficult start, we’re backing Liverpool and VVD in FPL GW3.

FPL GW3 Scout Picks – Midfielders
We’ve selected a midfield four of Gakpo (7.0m), Schade (6.0m), Foden (7.0m) and Cherki (7.6m) for our FPL GW3 Scout Picks team…
Let’s start with the Manchester City duo. Manchester City welcome Coventry City to the Etihad in FPL GW3 for a fixture which many FPL managers are targeting. While there is a lot of focus on Haaland due to the triple captain possibility, Foden and Cherki also deserve their time in the limelight for this excellent fixture against a newly promoted team. This is one of the last times in the first half of the season that City players will have a full week of rest between fixtures, making it an even better fixture to target as we know the players will be well rested and fully fit going into FPL GW3.
Coventry lost their first two matches in the PL, losing 3-0 to Arsenal and 0-1 to Hull in gameweeks 1 and 2. While they looked better against Hull this will surely be a more challenging test for Lampard’s side. Foden and Cherki are City’s best two attackers (outside of Haaland) to target considering their form, security of minutes and underlying numbers. Cherki has 2 goals and 2 assists to Foden’s 2 assists thus far and both players are averaging well over 1xGI/90 after the first two games. Cherki is the man in form and is understandably the more popular pick, but Foden is a great differential at a slightly lower price point and could be an excellent punt for this game before City’s new attacking singings are introduced into the mix and take minutes awya from both assets.
Gakpo comes into the team to replace Szoboszlai having impressed in GW1 and 2, bagging a goal involvement in both matches. The dutchman looks nailed in this new-look Liverpool attack in spite of Barcola’s signing, with his late move away from the club falling through at the last minute. Last season Gakpo scored 7 goals and 5 assists last year, averaging 0.54xGI/90 in a tumultuous season for the Reds. He proved his worth by playing off the right for Liverpool in FPL GW2 and will likely continue in this role for the forseeable.
While Szoboszlai is still the best Liverpool midfield pick in the long term, Gakpo looks like a great punt for GW3 due to Liverpool’s favourable fixture against a side that conceded 6 goals across their first 2 fixtures. Gakpo is in great attacking form and looked dangerous in both games – the dutchman occupies more advanced positions and is far more involved in the attack than Szoboszlai and is therefore a better option for those looking to profit from Ipswich’s poor defensive record and the attacking potential that this represents.
Our final midfield pick is Brentford’s Schade. We’re going for a Brentford triple up for their attractive fixture against Sunderland in FPL GW3 and Schade is by far the most attractive attacker going into this one. Schade represents excellent value at just 6.0m and while Sangare will be a popular pick following his huge haul against Spurs in FPL GW1, Schade offers more consistent attacking returns and higher haul potential than Sangare.
Schade was the 5th highest scoring Brentford asset last season and the third highest amongst midfielders and forwards behind Outtara and Thiago. This season Thiago has failed to impress and has looked a shadow of his former self after two GWs while Outtara has lost his place in the team to new signing Anthony. Schade therefore is the most attractive option and has shown himself capable of attacking big spaces in behind the opposition and often representing the outlet on long balls and counter attacks. Last season Schade scored 8 and assisted 3, averaging 0.53xGI/90 – on par with more expensive assets like the aforementioned Gakpo.

FPL GW3 Scout Picks – Forwards
Our forward line consists of Wissa (6.1m), Haaland (15.5m) and Isak (9.0m)…
Haaland naturally keeps his spot in the team and takes the captains armband from Bruno for Manchester City’s attractive fixture against Coventry. This pick needs little explanation really, but I’ll give it a go… Haaland is in good form having scored twice against Palace in GW2. In GW1 City created more than enough chances for Haaland to score, and he was unlucky not to – this new manager and system are clearly still trying to work to Haaland’s strengths, so it is understandable why he’s such a popular pick for this great fixture against promoted Coventry in FPL GW3.
Wissa comes into the team for Newcastle’s fixture against Bournemouth. Wissa has finally nailed down a spot in this Newcastle team following a challenging first season in black and white. The forward has bagged a goal and assist in his first two matches for Newcastle this season and will be confident of more goal involvements in the coming weeks over what is a positive fixture run for Newcastle United in the short term. Wissa represents great value at around 6.0m, but Elanga is also a great pick for those on a WC and looking to profit from Newcastle’s attractive fixture run…
Newcastle have perhaps been slightly lucky to secure 4 points across their first two premier league matches, creating just 1.59xG to Liverpools 3+xG in GW1 and coming away with a draw, then matching Spurs’ ~1xG in GW2 but scoring twice and keeping a clean sheet. That being said, stats aren’t everything and the magpies have looked like an exciting, direct attacking side across their first two this term. New manager Jaissle is of the Red Bull school and his team certainly play like one! Wissa and Elanga have been the beneficiaries of this new system so far, and with a great run of fixtures up ahead, now is a great time to target Newcastle assets!
Alexander Isak completes the Liverpool triple up and our FPL GW3 Scout Picks team! Isak rewarded the managers who put their faith in him by scoring in GW2 against Forest, though owners may be slightly concerned that outside of that goal the most expensive transfer in premier league history really struggled to have an affect on the game… With Ipswich, a side that conceded 6 across their first two fixtures, in GW3 now is certainly the time to back Isak once again, though if he fails to impress it might be the end for him as an FPL asset…
Liverpool’s striker is secure in minutes at the moment with Ekitike and Chiesa both out injured, so he is sure to start this game against Ipswich – for a single GW punt (for those on a Free Hit for example) I like this pick a lot, as he has a much higher ceiling in this fixture compared to other premium forwards (outside of Haaland). Furthermore, in that game against Forest Isak had 3 shots and scored his 1 big chance – he is slowly showing signs that he is getting back to being a premier league level striker, slowly but surely. Against Forest his xG was 0.99, against Newcastle it was 1.09xG – Isak will get a couple of big chances in this game and based on his showing against Forest I’d back him to score at least one!
