The Captaincy Master @AK_FPL1 returns with his FPL GW3 Wildcard Team Reveal. With three Top 5K finishes to his name, AK breaks down his updated team.
Following on from Saturday’s post where I hit the Wildcard button, there have been some updates after careful reading of all the games and developments that ensued over the week. The Wildcard button is officially activated, and I am very confident on the team I have at this moment.

AK’s Wildcard Team Reveal for FPL GW3

As anticipated, it was a lot of fun to tinker around with the team with unlimited transfers again, only after 2 weeks. Yet it is terrifying at the same time that the First Wildcard has already been committed to with only 2 rounds of the Premier League played. However, the strategy was always to BB early and then use one of Free Hit or Wildcard in GW3 depending on the circumstances.
Now that the old team has been binned, we look ahead at my updated Wildcard draft team, which should be the main team except for a couple of changes at best.

Goalkeepers
In my earlier post, I talked about not spending more than 9 million on my Goalkeepers. And now, I am going against that advice myself. Arsenal looked very solid (as usual) in their away win at Aston Villa, making it 2 out of 2 clean sheets in the league. And for that reason, I am now thinking of tripling up on their defence. David Raya (6.0) looks the most nailed in the Arsenal backline, along with Gabriel (8.0), while all the others do have some minutes/rotation risk. He is the ultimate set-and-forget keeper at this stage, and although you may question his value, it provides a secure route into the Arsenal defence. Even in their tough games, Arsenal seem to have around 35-40% chances of a clean sheet, which is usually a decent value to enable you to play your defenders. Although they do not have the best fixture against Chelsea at home, their robustness at the back should prove to be fruitful in the longer term. One less headache.
The other Goalkeeper is going to be the bench-warmer and does not need to be playing, since Raya is perma-play for me, and since the Bench Boost has been done away with, I would not really need to call upon my second keeper. For this reason, I have gone with Button (4.0).

FPL GW3 Wildcard – Defenders
Since Saturday, not much has changed in theory of picking the defenders, however, there have been some personnel changes. With Manchester City signing Enzo Fernandez on deadline day, Marc Guehi (6.0) would definitely stop starting in the midfield and provide competition at the back, which makes me a little nervous about Gvardiol’s (5.6) security of starts. I still feel he should be generally fine, but because of more competition, I think we could see some rotation here, and for that reason I have pivoted to Nico O’Reilly (6.5), who I had in my starting team and was unlucky to not return any points in the opening 2 games. O’Reilly has rotation risks just as much as Gvardiol, but his ability to join the attack more often edges it for me in picking the Manchester City defender.

New signing Ezri Konsa (4.4) keeps his place in my team from the earlier draft. Although the Englishman did not start the game against Aston Villa, Mosquera had a muscle problem in the game and was eventually replaced by Konsa. Personally, I think Konsa will find his place in the Arsenal backline, and at that price, it’s a gift from the FPL Gods.
Tripling up on Arsenal defence does not feel risky at all, as Calafiori (5.6) also keeps his place in my team. With 2 assists and 2 clean sheets in as many games, the Italian full-back is on a run of providing at least an assist and a clean sheet every game this season, including the Community Shield. However, with UCL coming up, his minutes will definitely be managed, and we will have to monitor him each gameweek, as he is prone to some injuries as well. Nonetheless, he is a solid pick when starting.
Stat: Arsenal have been super strong defensively having conceded only 1 big chance and just 0.53 xGC over two games (Both lowest in the League).

For the final 2 places, I have gone for the players with DefCon potential and playing for solid teams. Mallick Thiaw (5.0) is an easy pick at this point for me. Good fixtures, solid performances, good manager, DefCon potential, some goal threat from set pieces. All the good boxes are being ticked as he finds a way into my team.

The last defender is Kristoffer Ajer (4.5). Brentford have started the season very well and look like a very good team that’s clicking. Ajer also has massive Defcon potential, and at that price, he is basically a steal when starting. There may be a few question marks on his starting potential when Van Den Berg becomes fit, however, the way they are clicking, I don’t think Brentford would want to change their team composition much.

Midfielders
Cole Palmer (9.6) has looked really sharp and seems to be back in form, with another goal in his seven-goal thriller victory against Brighton at home. He seems to be moving very sharply, and now that he is back to scoring open-play goals, it’s only natural to back him. Add penalties to his locker, and you just feel like this might be one of those seasons where Palmer goes crazy with output.
Following up again from my draft from Saturday, Cherki (7.7) has kept his place in the team. Although now I am a lot less sure about him. There will definitely be rotation in his position soon, but he is on red-hot form, and it’s risky to bet against such an asset. I would consider this as a short-term pick, and can see myself moving for Rogers (7.5) when he faces Hull at home in GW4.

Dominick Szoboszlai (7.0) is the ultimate FPL pick, and this spot is not even a question for me. He is on set pieces, penalties, direct free kicks, and also has the knack for getting Defcon points if he is shifted to Right Back. For the last 2 spots in midfield, I have picked Pascal Gross (5.5) and Mamadou Sangare (5.7).

Gross managed a goal, an assist, and maximum bonus points against Chelsea away from home, so there is definitely attacking threat there. Add penalties to the mix, and he is a really solid option at that price. Mamadou Sangare hit the Defcon again, in their 1-1 draw against Leeds. He is just going to find himself picking up Defcons more often than not and is a solid option with a high floor of points. He may have attacking potential too, however, it would be silly to expect him to get attacking returns in every other game.

FPL GW3 Wildcard – Forwards
Erling Haaland (15.5) is in the team in the Wildcard. It’s nice to own him for the first time this season and possibly captain him in GW3 vs Coventry (H). There really is not much to say here, is there? Joao Pedro (7.5) has started the season really well, with 2 goals and 2 assists already in his first 2 games. With no European games this season, Chelsea would be looking to turn this season into a good one and have started really well. I am not sure if I want to start him against Arsenal in GW3, but he is an incredible asset with great potential this season.

Finally, Yoane Wissa (6.1) has made it into my final team. He looks very fit and has started the season really well. Wissa was back amongst the goals as well, with his cheeky strike in their 2-0 win against Spurs. There is a possibility that Wissa might also be on spot-kick duties, with Woltemade joining Juventus on loan in the summer. With both Gordon and Woltemade gone, the penalty duties are up in the air, and maybe it’s their talisman who steps up to take the next one.
