FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips: Players to Buy, Avoid, Sell & Hold

Let’s look at the top 10 scorers of GW2 and see how many of them also returned in GW1.

So, only 20% of the GW2 haulers had returned in GW1 as well.

Imagine being one of those 144,000+ managers who transferred out Bruno after his GW1 blank against Hull.

Which is exactly why we strongly recommend not making emotional, knee-jerk transfers or getting carried away chasing last week’s points.

FPL GW3 Transfer Tips: Players to BUY

PS: I am assuming everyone has Haaland in their teams. If not, he is your priority buy.

Rayan Cherki (£7.6m) – MID, Man City – 18.9% TSB

• 4 Bonus Points – highest among midfielders
• 4 Goal Involvements – highest among midfielders
• 2 Assists – highest among midfielders
• 0.86 xA – 2nd highest among midfielders
• 7 Key Passes – 2nd highest among midfielders
• 88 BPS – 2nd highest among midfielders
• 22 FPL points – 2nd highest among midfielders

The numbers are pretty difficult to ignore.

Cherki has already shown that he can contribute in multiple ways rather than relying on one-off goals. His 4 goal involvements, 2 assists and 0.86 xA highlight both his creativity and his involvement in City’s attacking play. Add in the bonus points and BPS numbers, and he is already ticking a lot of the boxes we look for in an FPL midfielder.

And now he gets Coventry at home. Only Palace and Spurs are below Coventry for goal difference and points tally, so this is exactly the kind of fixture where you want to have exposure to a Manchester City attacker.

At £7.6m and just 18.9% TSB, Cherki also offers something important — a chance to gain rank without jumping on a player everyone already owns. He looks like one of the best midfield options to bring in this week.

Isak (£9.0m) – FWD, Liverpool – 16.2% TSB

Liverpool play Ipswich – a team ranked 20th on almost every major defensive metric:

• xGC
• Goals conceded
• Big Chances conceded
• Shots conceded

And then there is Isak.

Among forwards, he is currently ranked:

• 1st for Big Chances
• 1st for NPxG
• 1st for xG
• 3rd for Shots
• 2nd for Shots on Target
• 3rd for Shots in the Box
• 3rd for Goals scored

That is quite a list.

Isak has all the underlying numbers you want from a premium forward and now gets arguably the best possible fixture for an attacking asset. Liverpool is likely to dominate possession, create chances and put Ipswich under sustained pressure.

At only 16.2% TSB, there is also plenty of upside here. Isak is not even among the Top 20 most-transferred-in players this GW.

So, if you are looking for a forward to bring in, Isak is the cheat code this week. Get him before everyone else does.

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips: Players to AVOID

Konstantinos Tzolakis (£4.5m) – GKP, Hull City – 4.9% TSB

Tzolakis is currently the most-transferred-in goalkeeper this GW.

However, there is an important distinction between him and his teammates likes Ajayi and Egan who are also very high in demand. While the latter two are £4.0m budget-enabling defenders, Tzolakis costs £4.5m, which means you are investing in him as a potential starting goalkeeper.

He has already delivered two double-digit returns, but context matters.

The first came against an unprepared Manchester United, while the second came against fellow promoted side Coventry. Both were excellent FPL returns, but neither fixture is a particularly strong indicator of what is to come.

From GW3 onwards, the fixtures get significantly tougher: Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle are next.

And Hull’s defensive numbers from the Championship last season don’t exactly inspire confidence:

• 66 goals conceded – 4th-worst in the 24-team league
• 80.1 xGC – 2nd-worst defensive underlying record in the division

So, at £4.5m, why take the risk?

There are other £4.5m goalkeepers available who play behind significantly stronger defences – Verbruggen and Petrović, to name a couple.

Tzolakis may continue to make saves and pick up bonus points, but the fixture run suggests this is the wrong time to jump on him.

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips: Players to SELL

Brian Brobbey (£6.0m) – FWD, Sunderland – 11.4% TSB

The whole narrative around Sunderland assets before GW1 was their opening fixtures.

Ipswich and Fulham. A promoted side. A team with a new manager. What could go wrong?

Well… quite a lot, apparently.

The Sunderland experiment has imploded spectacularly so far. Le Fée and Adingra have already been among the casualties in terms of price drops, while Brobbey still sits at a higher ownership than both.

And now the fixtures turn.

Brentford, Arsenal and Manchester City are Sunderland’s next three opponents.

That is not exactly the fixture run you want when owning an £6.0m forward who hasn’t given you the returns you were hoping for.

There are also better options at the same price point. DCL and Wissa, for example, offer more attractive alternatives.

So, if you still own Brobbey, this looks like the right time to move on — before the price drops start hurting as well.

FPL Gameweek 3 Transfer Tips: Players to HOLD

Igor Thiago (£8.0m) – FWD, Brentford – 15.4% TSB

Thiago has the 4th-highest xGI among forwards.

Yet he is the only one in the Top 4 without a single goal involvement so far.

That tells you quite a lot.

The underlying numbers suggest that the returns are coming – Thiago simply hasn’t converted his opportunities yet. And it is not as if he hasn’t had the chances. He even missed a penalty against Kinsky.

Sometimes, FPL is simply about accepting that good process doesn’t always produce immediate points.

And the next fixture is a very good one.

Brentford face Sunderland at home, and Thiago has already shown that he enjoys this fixture. He scored three goals across the last two meetings last season.

Sunderland have also been relatively quiet in the transfer market, with little significant strengthening of the squad.

If you own Thiago, HOLD.

The underlying numbers are good, the fixture is good and there is no reason to chase the points elsewhere just because the goals haven’t arrived yet.

Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m) – MID, Liverpool – 42.4% TSB

Despite having the 2nd-highest FPL points total and 2nd-highest xGI among Liverpool players, Szoboszlai is currently the 4th-highest transferred-out player (highest among Liverpool assets) this GW.

Are managers acting prudently?

Liverpool play Ipswich – a team which just conceded five goals in their last match.

And Szoboszlai is on free kicks, penalties and corners.

Do I need to say much more?

This is exactly the type of situation where FPL managers can overthink things. Yes, there may be better long-term midfield options. Yes, Liverpool have several attacking assets. But why sell a midfielder who is delivering on both ends of the pitch (goals/ DefCons), has strong underlying numbers and is about to face one of the league’s weakest defences?

I would absolutely not sell Szoboszlai before this fixture.

Sometimes the best transfer is simply no transfer at all.
