Grabbing a respectable finish in FPL was easy up until a few seasons ago, but that’s no longer the case. Millions of managers now compete in arguably the most famous fantasy game in the world. Last season, FPL had more than 13 million accounts. Alongside the sheer volume of managers, there’s also far more FPL content (blogs, videos, streams, Spaces, newsletters, etc.) and tools readily available, which has made securing a top finish more complicated. Reflecting on my past seasons, I’ve developed eight quick FPL tips that have helped me to three top 5K finishes. In this blog, I’ll go into the detail of each one to help you finish the 26/27 season with a high rank.

8 Simple & Effective FPL Tips for the 2026/27 Season
Tip 1: Balance is Key
The start of the season, especially GW1, is one of the most important Gameweeks you will have the whole year. It is the busiest week of the season where the highest number of FPL managers are active, and also the most unpredictable week as there is no previous data to analyze. Every team starts afresh, some have new managers, almost all teams have new players, and we have 3 newly promoted teams in the league.
The FPL Teams of GW1 usually look vastly different to the teams in GW5. Some are forced to use the Wildcards, while others try to navigate the period holding the same. It is very important to create a flexible and balanced team of 15, so that you can move to players from different price points easily. As a rule of thumb, I try to create a balance where I have more than one route to a player that I do not have, while spending no more than 2 transfers in doing so.
A well-balanced team does not necessarily mean that you will start well, or you will be able to navigate without being forced into an early and unplanned Wildcard, but it does reduce the chances of one.

Tip 2: Avoid Over-Planning and Pre-Booked Transfers

This is one of the most important principles, and it’s one that gets violated by everyone. There is no need to over-plan FPL, especially with pre-booked transfers. The players you think are attractive now would most likely not be as attractive in future GWs. FPL is very dynamic, and the conditions change every week. It would be a huge mistake to make a team for GW1 and plan future transfers for GW2/3/4 etc., as we just don’t know what will happen. Injuries/suspensions are a huge part, and surprise starts/benchings could easily occur, especially at the start of the season.
Picking a team with the safest and most nailed players in combination with good fixtures in the next 4 to 6 Gameweeks mitigates the risk to a large extent.

Tip 3: Don’t chase points, chase the potential of points instead
As FPL managers and emotional human beings, we tend to chase the facts of the past more than the potential of the future. It is important to analyze how a certain player has performed in terms of stats and eye test, rather than points on the board alone. If the said player has scored 2 long-range goals, and has very deep positioning and is not threatening the goal from close range, it might be best to wait and analyze before committing a transfer on the player.
A rule of thumb that I always follow is that I ask myself – “Would I still be interested in this player if he had not scored these many points in the current Gameweek?” More often than not, you would be able to answer your own question.
Tip 4: Avoid taking unnecessary hits

Making multiple transfers is of course very exciting as we get to change underperforming players for the new shiny toys in town. But this comes at a cost, as you get only one free transfer per Gameweek and any additional transfer is worth a 4-points hit. It is important to keep your FPL discipline in check and avoid unnecessary hits. In case you are not able to field 11 players due to injuries/suspensions/dropped players in your team even after utilising the free transfer, taking a hit makes sense. But these have to be carefully analyzed on an individual basis.
Tip 5: Do not always chase Team Value

Most FPL managers get caught in the game of chasing Team Value by looking at predicted price rises of FPL assets and feeling forced to make moves, even if such player has a game in a different competition before the Gameweek for which the move is being made. It is an aggressive strategy, one which comes with its own risks and rewards. The rewards might be negligible, but the risks are huge. You may transfer in a player early that may get injured during a match or in training during the week and wasting the transfer you just made.
However, in the early season, I would advice to be softer on this rule. The user base is very active early doors and price rises and falls happen more quickly. Building team value at the start till you use the first Wildcard is a strategy that definitely could work in your favour.
Tip 6: You do not need a team of Differentials to get a good rank
Many FPL managers fall into the trap of thinking that owning differentials and going against the crowd is the only way to rise up the ranks, although this is not true. Not every team is always the same, and it’s key to be consistent and disciplined with FPL decisions. If any differentials do come up that are potentially good FPL assets and are risk-free, certainly they should be looked at. But differentials are differentials for a reason.
Remember, the aim is to get the most points, whether 80% of the teams get it or 8%.
Tip 7: When in doubt, do nowt
As FPL managers, we will always face decisions that are not as straightforward. Often, there will be situations where saving a free transfer or making a move would be the options presented to us. Whenever the decision is not as straightforward, saving the free transfer and delaying the move by one more week is the safest decision.
Tip 8: Be prepared for last-minute leaks/news
Seasoned FPL managers have this edge. They are always prepared for any last-minute news/leaks. Last-minute leaks usually come out for either the first fixture(s) of the day or the games right after. Always be prepared for any adverse news that affects your players. Have pre-determined plans – “If AB does not start, XY would be my go-to pick”.
Having clarity keeps you calm and focused. Most FPL managers would be panicking and vulnerable to making mistakes, and you may be presented a chance to turn adverse situations into opportunities.
