A Guide to FPL Team Structure | 2026/27 FPL Season

FPL Team Structure refers to nothing but the orientation or the making of your FPL team based on positions, prices, and formation. It is important to understand team structure while building your FPL team due to a variety of reasons, especially at the start of the season, due to the large number of unknown variables in the game. It is crucial to know your team structure due to a variety of reasons-

Importance of FPL Team Structure

• Flexibility (Moving from one player/position/formation to another)
• Reduce the number of hits
• Potential routes to highly owned EO players that you don’t own
• Money in the bank

Price Points and Players to Target:

Goalkeepers

• £6.0 – POTENTIAL TRAGET – Raya
• £5.5 – LIKELY AVOID – Pickford
• £5.0 – TARGET- Lammens, Kelleher, Sanchez, Roefs, Trafford
• £4.5 – TARGET– Kinsky, Verbruggen, Petrović, Leno
• £4.0 – BENCH FODDER– No likely starters

Defenders:

• £4.0 – BENCH FODDER– Bobby Thomas, Van Ewijk, Diop, O’Shea
• £4.5 – TARGET – Kadioglu, Shaw, Konsa, Aina, Rodon, Ajer
• £5.0 -TARGET– Ballard, Muharemović, Vuskovic, Williams, Van Hecke

FPL Team Structures

Haaland (£15.5), Bruno (£12.0) and Gabriel (£8.0) are priced as Tier 1 – the most expensive players in the game. They are in a league of their own, and they don’t fall under any price point. So we will use their names directly in the article. So, for the ease of understanding and convenience of the article, the next set of expensive midfielders (Palmer, Saka, Semenyo) are listed as Premium Midfielders. Watkins, Thiago, and Isak are classified as Premium Forwards. Defenders between £5.5 and £ 6.0 are listed as Premium Defenders.

• Haaland – Haaland
• Bruno – Bruno
• Gabriel – Gabriel
• Premium Midfielders (8.0 & above) – Saka, Palmer, Mbeumo, Cunha, Semenyo
• Premium Forwards (8.0 & above) – Thiago, Watkins, Isak
• Premium Defenders – All DEFs from 5.5- 6.5 Mil – Van Dijk, Mosquera, O’Reilly, Gvardiol, Hill, Tarkowski, Munoz, etc

For the understanding of this blog, we have divided this article into 6 Team structures built around them-

• Haaland + Bruno + Two Premium Midfielders + 3 Premium Defenders
• Draft with Haaland + Bruno + 1 Premium Midfielder + 2 Premium Defenders
• Haaland + Bruno + 1 Premium Midfielder + 1 Premium Defender
• Haaland + Bruno + Gabriel + 1 Premium Midfielder
• Haaland + 3 Premium Midfielders + 2 Premium Defenders (No Bruno)
• Bruno + 2 Premium Midfielders + 3 Premium Defenders + 1 Premium Forward (No Haaland) + GW1 Bench Boost

Note: The players mentioned here in the drafts are just a placeholder for the price points, and you can switch around if you feel it would be better.

FPL Team Structures

Team Structure 1 – Draft with Haaland + Bruno + Two Premium MIDs + 3 Premium DEFs

• This draft is rated 93% on FFHUB and is fairly template with Haaland + Bruno along with Joao Pedro.
• Semenyo and Mbeumo are the other premium midfielders, the benefit of going with both of them is you can get to Saka/Palmer easily if needed based on their performance. The other advantage of going with 2 Premium Midfielders is that you can also downgrade to Wirtz/Szoboszlai/Foden price range if needed to spread out the funds.
• Defence has three premium defenders with Mosquera, Gvardiol and Calafiori. Multiple premium defenders enables you to switch to other premium defenders easily.
• One 5.0 and one 5.5 midfielder are both DEFCON Midfielders slots, which have Sangare and Gomez currently. Alternative options (5.0 – Caleb Yirenkyi/Florentino Luis/Matusiwa) (5.5 – Ampadu/Gross/Xhaka)
• 4.5 Forward is a dead spot in this structure which is the only caveat. If one of Igor Jesus/DCL/Osula have an excellent start to the season and become a must own pick(in terms of value)- You might be scrambling to get them in your team.
• If you are going ahead with this structure, you should not plan Bench Boost in GW1/GW2 but the team is set long term. Late Wildcard followed by Late Bench Boost should be the play.

Team Structure 2 – Draft with Haaland + Bruno + 1 Premium Midfielder + 2 Premium Defenders

• This draft almost has the players at all important price points- £7.5 FWD, £9.5 MID, £7.0 MID, £5.5 MIDs (Two of them), £5.5 DEFs(Two of them) and a £4.5 DEF, which is why we like this Team structure a lot.
• The draft is also rated 92% on FFHUB
• There are good routes and flexibility to get to other players who you don’t own now but might need later, like Rogers and Mbeumo.
• There are 2 Premium Defenders in this Draft – Mosquera and Gvardiol, who are both premium defenders from strong defences. If needed, you can switch to DEFCON defenders later if needed who all are mostly new signings like Vuskovic and Muharemovic.

Team Structure 3 – Haaland + Bruno + 1 Premium MID + 1 Premium DEF

• This is a Draft structure with Haaland + Bruno + 1 Premium Midfielder + 1 Premium Defender.
• DCL is the 6.0 forward choice in this draft, there are quite a lot of options in this price point (Igor Jesus, Solanke, Brobbey)
• There are two DEFCON defenders at 5.0 Million each who can be set and forget for a long time.
• There’s also a 6.0 midfielder and 7.5 midfielder, which allows you to move to a 6.0 or 6.5 mid/ any other 7.5 mid easily based on how things go in the first few games.
• This is one of the Team Structures that really suit a GW1 Bench Boost. Here is a Draft with this Team Structure along with a GW1 Bench Boost.

Team Structure 3 – Haaland + Bruno + 1 Premium MID + 1 Premium DEF + GW1 Bench Boost

Team Structure 4 – Haaland + Bruno + Gabriel + 1 Premium Midfielder

• This is a Draft with Haaland + Bruno + Gabriel + 1 Premium Midfielder
• The main caveat of spending 8.0 million on Gabriel is that it considerably weakens the rest of the team. It has 3 defenders from 4.5-5 million price point while the 5.5 Premium Defender price point is where the value and flexibility is. The midfield is also reduced to a 5.0-5.5-6.0 combination which is decent on paper but could be a cause of concern with few injuries/early transfers.

Team Structure 5 – Haaland + 3 Premium Midfielders + 2 Premium Defenders (No Bruno)

• This is a Draft with Haaland + 3 Premium Midfielders+ 2 Premium Defenders but no Bruno Fernandes.
• Going without Fernandes helps you to get the All Star Midfield of Palmer + Semenyo + Mbeumo + Wirtz. Mbeumo helps you to cover the Manchester United attack for the first 2 games and Palmer also provides the Differential upside.
• By going with three premium midfielders, you can get to Bruno in two transfers if needed.
• Not going with Bruno can help you plan a GW1 Bench Boost with good upside and 91% Team Rating and 77.8 Predicted Points in FFHUB for GW1.

Haaland + 2 Premium Midfielders + 2 Premium Defenders (No Bruno) along with GW1 Bench Boost

• Going without Bruno Fernandes helps you to spread out the funds nicely across positions helping you to build up to a GW1 Bench Boost Team.
• This structure has three Premium Defenders from 3 different teams in the form of Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea. Palestra is a punt in this structure but can become a second Arsenal defender if you are confident from the start or can go little later when Arsenal’s slightly tough fixture run is over.
• The caveat is obviously no Bruno Fernandes who has two good fixtures to start the season and will also be a popular captaincy choice as well- But well, you can’t have them all!

Team Structure 6 – Bruno + 2 Premium Midfielders + 3 Premium Defenders + 1 Premium FWD (No Haaland) + GW1 Bench Boost

• This draft has the money spread out, and you can even play the bench boost in GW1 and get done with it. If we get news that Haaland is not certain to start GW1(with fitness concerns), this structure would need more attention.
• This is a good strategy(at your own risk with no Haaland :P) to consider if you are planning BB1 and FH3. You can bring in Haaland in GW3 Free Hit vs Coventry(H).
• With no Haaland, there is pressure to make the right call in picking the premium midfielders, which includes Bruno, Semenyo, Mbeumo, Cunha, Gibbs White, Saka and Palmer. Here are the Predicted Points for the premium midfielders for the first 6 Gameweeks via Fantasy Football Hub.
• We have gone for Bruno, Semenyo and Mbeumo, who are top three for predicted points for the first five gameweeks.

• There are good routes and flexibility to get to other players who you don’t own now but might need later, like Haaland, Rogers, Watkins, Palmer/Saka, etc.

Conclusion and Key Points- FPL Team Structure

• Importance of £6.0 Forward: You must plan to have at least one £6.0 Forward in your teams because that is the price point that allows you to …. Also, there are quite a lot of quality and reliable options in your £6.0 million price bracket – DCL, Igor Jesus, Solanke, Brobbey, whom you can swap around among them based on fixture runs.

• BIG AT THE BACK is so back: £5.0-£5.5 Defenders are value for money compared to Midfielders in the same price point.

Impact of DEFCON- Defenders vs Budget Mids vs Budget Forwards Comparison:

Most Points last season: (Included only Players <= £6.5 this season)

Key Notes from the above data:

• Despite FPL increasing the prices of DEFCON DEFs & MIDs, they are still excellent value for money. Think FPL got it spot on with Pricing this season
• Guehi, Senesi(if nailed), VVD, Tarko are all fixture-proof & good picks even though they are Premiums now
• Playing 5 at the back is genuinely a good option as suggested by Player Count in Top 50 – GK(9), DEF(20), MID(18), FWD(3)
• The 1st Forward in the above list comes only at 20th position(DCL)
• As many as 11 DEFs make the Top 20 & most of them are DEFCON guys
• Raya at £6.0 is a good shout & still a value pick
• Garner(Currently injured), Anderson, Le Fee all might sound boring but will tick over through the season & get the job done

Other Key Notes and Team Structure Notes:

• These are all important price points that allow flexibility around your Team Structure – One or two 7.5-8.5 MIDS, One or two 5.5 DEFs, One 5.5 MID, One 7.5 FWD.
• Don’t go with NO BRUNO AND HAALAND– It is not advisable to go without both Bruno and Haaland. Even going without one of them is a riskier move in our opinion as it might be difficult to get them later.
• Planning for Isak/Saka/Palmer– Not Picking a Palmer/Saka and Isak is totally fine for GW1 but you should build and plan a team structure in such a way that you can get them easily later if needed.
• Lack of Mid-priced Forwards other than Joao Pedro/Cheap Forwards: This is what makes things interesting with no standout Forwards options at 5.5 or lower and not much competition for Pedro in the 7.5 price point. This makes Pedro almost close to a must own considering he has had a full and good pre-season as well.
• Rotating 4.5/5.0 Defenders is a legit option this season(Read more: Best FPL Rotational Pairs and Combinations for 2026/27 FPL Season). Finding starting 4.0 million defenders is also not difficult.
• Great value in £6.0 and less MID. There might be two penalty takers for Mid-table teams in Ndiaye and Le Fee. There are solid reliable 5.5 Million Midfielders in Sangare, Gross who must be very nailed and consistent as well.
• There is no starting £4.5 Midfielder at the moment (Eye on Slater & Yates). So it is not advisable to go for a dead spot in midfield spoiling your flexibility.
• Team Structure 1 and Team Structure 3 are our favorites right now due to the flexibility it offers in terms of team structure, transfers and formations.
