In this post, we’ll be examining the best differentials for MD5/Round of 16 of the World Cup, focusing on players with low ownership who can offer high returns! We’ll be selecting players with good fixtures based on form, stats, and expected data.

Differentials for MD5/Round of 16 – Defenders
Digne ($5 – 0.9%) – France
France once again demonstrated against Sweden why they are considered favourites for this tournament: fluid attacking play, aggressive defending and a star-studded line-up – it’s hard to look past them at this point. Unfortunately, however, almost all of their starting XI of players are over the 5% ownership threshold, rendering them ineligible for this list of differentials for MD5. Digne is the only defensive asset currently under 5% ownership; is he a worthy entry into this list?
France have kept 2 clean sheets in 4 matches so far this tournament, conceding to Senegal in MD1 and Norway in MD3. Norway had the better of the chances in that game, and it is also the only match so far in which France have conceded over 1xGA. Digne has started just two of France’s matches at the World Cup, playing in MD2 against Iraq and subsequently MD4 against Sweden – this suggests to me that he is indeed now first choice for Deschamps. Digne’s attacking potential is limited, creating just 1 chance and taking 1 shot so far this tournament, but it is his clean sheet potential and scouting bonus which make him a good pick. A cheap and sub 5% way into France’s backline – yes please!
Spence ($4.5 – 0.6%) – England
In a similar vein, Spence is likely to start for England for the remainder of the tournament and is therefore a great pick for those of us looking to profit from England’s defensive prowess. Konsa was my first choice England pick for a while, as he is nailed and was for a long time sub 5%, but the herd have since caught on and he is not over the threshold – very sad indeed. Spence has started just one game for England so far this tournament and was hooked just after 60 minutes. In other circumstances he would be nowhere near this starting XI or this list, but England find themselves in a bit of a right-back situation, with Spence the only fit RB left in the squad…
Quansah failed to impress against Panama, while O’Reilly continues to struggle at left back, so I would not be surprised to see Spence start the rest of the games England play in this tournament – either at LB or, more probably, at RB. If he indeed does, then he will be an excellent differential for MD5 and beyond, considering England’s defensive credentials. Tuchel’s side will play Mexico in the RO16, a side who have impressed defensively, but overperformed their underlying attacking numbers somewhat.
Mazraoui ($4.4 – 1.7%) – Morocco
Mazraoui returns to the differential fray after an absence following him not starting in MD3 against Haiti (which I personally found very upsetting as I’d suggested him in the MD3 differentials post and subsequently transferred him into my own team!). As I wrote in that MD3 post, “While not as attacking as Hakimi on the opposite flank, Mazraoui has shown a willingness to get forwards on occasion“.
Looking at how Morocco set up, they tend to drop into a midblock without the ball before launching fast, direct attacks. Mazraoui can often be found making over and underlapping runs without the ball and has received the ball in the box (or just outside it) on a number of occasions already this tournament. This is also illustrated in his heatmap against the Netherlands in MD4 (see below). Morocco face a weak Canada side that have struggled to score goals (outside of an anomalous 6-0 thrashing of 9-man Qatar) and who barely scraped past South Africa in MD4.

Other Defenders to consider for MD5 | Round of 16:
- Sanchez ($4 – 3.4%) – Mexico (Tough fixture against England but good defensive numbers. Mexico yet to concede a goal. 1 assist.)
- De Cuyper ($4.7 – 1.5%) – Belgium (Attacking potential is huge. Lower CS potential.)
- Robinson ($5 – 3.3%) – USA (Belgium or Senegal in MD5. Decent defensive numbers. Attacking potential.)
Differentials for MD5/Round of 16 – Midfielders
Barcola ($8 – 1.6%) – France
Barcola has become the left winger of choice for Deschamps at this tournament. Having been benched in MD1 in favour of Doue, Barcola worked his way back into the team and has shown himself to be a capable option on the left wing. Currently, the PSG star is tied for points with Olise, having picked up 2 goals and 1 assist so far this tournament. France face Paraguay in MD5, a side that beat Germany in one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, but will definitely struggle against this powerful French side.
FACT: Barcola is 3rd in the French squad for goals per 90 (0.87) and second for xG/90 (0.63)
Anderson (6.5% – 1%) – England
The Geordie superstar midfielder and record British transfer keeps his spot in the differentials post for MD5. The England midfielder is a somewhat boring pick for this list, but has the potential to deliver huge hauls for his small set of owners. Anderson has so far delivered 14 points from 1 assist, 2 clean sheets and some tackle points, missing out on the scouting bonus by 1 point on one occasion!
Regardless, Anderson has the potential to deliver hauls through a variety of point-scoring avenues, picking up the odd attacking return, tackle points, clean sheet points, and potentially chance creation and shot on target points. Much like Bruno G, Anderson can and will do it all! The Englishman needs only a clean sheet, a tackle point, and either chances created or shots to achieve the threshold of 4+ points and achieve the scouting bonus. Bruno G, his ex-teammate, has proven that midfielders are capable of delivering hauls in this way, and I’m confident Anderson can do the same!
Mac Allistar ($6.6 – 4.1%) – Argentina
Argentina are second favourites for the tournament, in large part thanks to Messi’s heroics in the group stage, and will be confident that they can go far considering they can get to the final of the World Cup without playing a top 10 ranked side (Colombia, their possible semi-final opponents, are ranked 11th)! Lautaro Martinez (a forward in the game) is certainly one to consider, but in the midfield department, Mac Allister looks like the best option…
As with Anderson and Bruno G, Mac Allister has so far delivered clean sheet, tackle, and assist points, picking up exactly the same total as Anderson thus far – 14! Even in his 30-minute cameo against Jordan in MD3, the Liverpool midfielder managed to pick up some tackle points, which is no surprise considering Argentina’s midfield have to work double time to make up for Messi’s understandable lack of defensive output. Sure, this is perhaps another boring pick, but it’s important to select players that will go far in the tournament to prevent you from having to make too many unnecessary transfers every MD. Also, as Bruno G and Anderson have/will show, there is huge potential for these all-round midfield types, especially with the scouting bonus on the table!
Other Midfielders to consider for MD5 | Round of 16:
- Vargas ($6.8 – 2.8%) – Switzerland (Differentials Icon. Huge returns in the group stage. Colombia* in RO16.)
- Brahim Díaz ($6.4 – 3%) – Morocco (Canada in RO16. 2 assists. CS potential.)
- Tillman ($6.1 – 0.4%) – USA (Similar to Bruno G/Anderson. Variety of avenues for point scoring. Good RO16 fixture against belgium)
Differentials for MD5/Round of 16 – Forwards
Alvarado ($5.3 – 0.2%) – Mexico
While Quinones and Jimenez will likely get most of the plaudits for their roles in Mexico’s success at the World Cup so far, Alvarado has been an awesome attacking presence in Mexico’s front three across the tournament. The winger has 3 assists so far, only failing to produce an attacking return against South Korea in MD2. The winger has been creating a great number of chances for his teammates thus far, creating 10 chances and 4 big chances across the tournament so far and averaging 0.33xA/90.
The Liga MX star also offers some goal threat, taking 3 shots in the RO32 against Ecuador and 2 shots across the other 3 matches. These numbers should not be looked down on, however, as Mexico are a fairly low-volume shot-taking team, with Quinones, their highest-scoring player, averaging 3 shots per 90. Mexico have a tough RO16 fixture against England, but could well edge the European side out – need I remind you how powerful the Azteca can be when it’s full of Mexico supporters…? It’s a gamble for sure, but it could be one worth taking!
Embolo ($7.5 – 1.4%)
Averaging 8 points per game so far this tournament and a nailed starter for dark horses Switzerland, Embolo is an excellent pick for those looking to benefit from Switzerland’s kind RO16 draw against Colombia. Embolo’s numbers so far this tournament are crazy: 1 goal and 2 assists and he doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon!
FACT: Embolo has 1.04xGI/90 so far this world cup
With the creative force of Vargas behind him and a defensively sound Swiss back four to protect from the counter, Embolo is given a lot of license to get up the pitch at pace and to make runs in behind, something he does so well for club and country. If you watch the highlights of the Bosnia match you can see how Embolo is truly an all-round forward – holding up the ball, acting as a backboard for passes, making runs in behind, and generally disrupting opposition defenses by being a presence in and around the box. So far this tournament he’s taken 7 shots (so just over 2 per game), 6 inside the box, and is underperforming his xG by about 1.
Other Forwards to consider for MD5 | Round of 16:
- Pepi ($5.9 – 0.1%) – USA (Balogun suspended so likely starting CF for USMNT against Belgium in RO16.)
- Quiñones ($5.6 – 1.1%) – Mexico (Another good Mexico option if you fancy them against England)
- Lautaro Martínez ($8.8 – 2.6%) – Argentina (Starting alongside Messi. Underwhelmed so far. Unlikely to play 90. Good run to the final)
