Explaining the Group Stage Tiebreakers
Prior to the 2026 World Cup, Official FIFA revealed many new rules or changes for this tournament. Hydration breaks, 5-second restarts, and a red card for a player who covers their mouth when speaking with an opponent. However, for group stage placement, the head-to-head finish, rather than goal difference, becomes an important tiebreaker for tied teams.
How does head-to-head work?
Simply put, the head-to-head tiebreaker is the win-loss ratio between two teams. If Team A defeats Team B, Team A gets a higher ranking based on its previous victory, which takes precedence over Team B’s number of goals scored, even when tied on points.
To bring this into reality, let’s use Group E’s current standings to explain better. Germany won Curacao 7-1 (3 points) and defeated Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 (3 points); thus, the DFB team have secured 6 points and are mathematically through to the Round of 32.
However, based on head-to-head rules, even if Germany loses its final game against Ecuador and second-place Ivory Coast wins 10-0 against Curacao, it won’t matter because Germany has a better win ratio over the Ivorians.
Thus, Germany are now confirmed Group E winners (E1) and looking forward to facing one of the best third-placed teams, with Paraguay (D3) or Sweden as its likely opponents in the knockout stage.
Best Third Place Rankings
Due to the latest FIFA expansion to 48 teams, we now have a Round of 32 stage before the Round of 16. To this end, the best eight teams from Groups A to L who finish third in their respective groups will be selected to make up the round. Based on data analyst simulations, for a team to qualify here, that team will need at least 3 points with a low negative goal difference.
At this junction, there are a lot of permutations involved to qualify, but to simplify it for our readers, let’s use data from already established group winners to explain.
- Mexico won Group A (A1) and can face Scotland (C3) should the Scots draw (avoid defeat against Brazil next) or lose while conceding a low goal difference.
- USA won Group D (D1) and can face Bosnia (B3) or Ecuador (E3) depending on who wins their final game with a higher goal difference.
Which team needs it more?
Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Brazil, Morocco, Japan, and the Netherlands are all on 4 points, with all sides pushing to finish as group winners and get a favourable tie in the next round. Korea Republic and Ivory Coast need at least a draw to finish in second place in Groups A and C against South Africa and Curaçao, respectively.
Belgium are winless in their last two games and stand a chance of falling into the final third or getting eliminated entirely, while Egypt are on the path to finish as Group G winners. It is these aforementioned nations we’ll largely revolve our MD3 wildcard selection around.
Goalkeepers
With two games, one clean sheet, and four saves for the Atlas Lions, 35-year-old Al Hilal keeper Yassine Bounou ($4.7m) has a wealth of experience as Morocco’s last line of defence and will have no trouble keeping a clean sheet against Haiti, who have already been eliminated.
Croatian shot-stopper Dominik Livakovic ($4.5m) was excellent in the opening game against England making seven saves and nearly caught a penalty. Taking on Ghana next, Livakovic will back himself to keep the Black Stars at bay in a must-win encounter for the Kockasti.
Defenders
The Atlas Lions’ captain, Achraf Hakimi ($6m), had the most touches (108) in the game against Scotland, playing high up as almost a right winger and was involved in three corner kicks. With Morocco set to push in for Group C winners, Hakimi is a must-have asset to consider for attacking returns.
Van Dijk is no stranger to scoring from set pieces; meanwhile, Dumfries contributed two assists in the 5-1 victory and had eight defensive contributions while being a constant threat against Sweden. This makes him a hot prospect for attacking returns.
The Netherlands’ duo of Denzel Dumfries ($5.7m) and Virgil van Dijk ($5.5m) seems to be the best route to take against an already eliminated Tunisian side who struggle to score.
Securing his second clean sheet for Spain, Marc Cucurella ($5.1m) now combines for 17 points in FIFA World Cup fantasy. Against Saudi Arabia, Cucu had four touches in the opposition box and came close to scoring with his goal deflected in by the opposition.
The 27-year-old Spaniard brings an extra touch of unpredictability against his rivals, constantly running into the final third, excelling in quick recoveries in defence, and will be crucial in La Roja’s final game against Uruguay.
Should England secure a win against Ghana, we can expect the Three Lions’ boss, Thomas Tuchel, to make big changes in Matchday 3. Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa ($4.8m) might be the only asset unaffected, as he can fit into the right-back position if Reece James ($5.2m) minutes get managed.
With only 1% ownership to his name, Konsa is eligible for scouting bonus and is expected to score at least 9 points if England keeps a clean sheet against Panama.

Midfielders
Japan are the real “dark horses” of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, one player that stands out for the Samurai Blues is Keito Nakamura ($5.5m). The Japanese winger has contributed one goal and an assist in his first two games, and with Japan’s attacking threat, Nakamura has potential to do more when they face Sweden in their final group game. He is also a budget enabler at his price and a prospect for scouting bonus.
Morocco’s Ismael Saibari ($6.8m) and Brazil’s Vinicius Jr ($10m) were recommended in our MD2 wildcard team, and, to no surprise, both players are listed based on their superb form for their respective nations.
Vini Jr has combined for 20 points and Saibari 21 points in their first two games; if you had both assets since MD 1, you would be 41 points ahead of your mini-league rivals. Activating your wildcard booster gives us another opportunity to fit these in-form forwards in our MD3 team.
Ivory Coast’s captain Franck Kessie ($5.9m) was a thorn in the side against Germany in Matchday 2, scoring the first goal to put the Ivorian ahead.
The 29-year-old midfield maestro made 5 ball recoveries, three touches in the opposition box and was involved in three passes into the final third. Kessie brings a mix of both attacking returns and defensive contributions, making himself a go-to pick for the Elephants in their final group game against Curaçao.
As of writing, Portugal is yet to play Uzbekistan in MD 2; however, 31-year-old Bruno Fernandes ($8.5m) is still a crucial asset to have in the final matchup against Colombia. Bruno is still the second most-owned asset in the game, and should he get an attacking return soon, it secures your safety against the populace. Keep trusting in the Man United skipper!

Forwards
Despite having a poor Matchday 1 performance, Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal ($8.1m) made up for his errors and contributed three attacking returns in 30 minutes against Saudi Arabia, registering 15 points for fantasy managers. This newfound form is a weapon Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, will look to maximise against Uruguay as Spain pushes to top Group H.
🆕France’s all-time goalscorer, Kylian Mbappé ($10.5m), now has scored 16 goals in the World Cup and is only two goals away from matching Lionel Messi’s recent all-time goal record (18). It will be a fierce battle between France and Norway, as Mbappé and Norway’s Erling Haaland will share a friendly rivalry for who scores the most goals in that game.
If you read our best forwards article, you won’t be shocked to see Cody Gakpo ($7.7m) score a brace and earn 19 points against Sweden. It was highlighted then that the Dutch forward brings a guarantee of playing time compared to teammates Memphis Depay and Donyell Malen and is now set to take penalties.
Believe it or not, this Dutch side are unbeaten in their last 14 apps (9 wins, 5 draws) in the World Cup, and Gakpo has scored 5 goals in 5 World Cup apps for Ronald Koeman. Facing Tunisia next, who have conceded the most goals (9) in this contest, Cody Gakpo is a top asset to have and a strong captain pick suggestion for our MD3 wildcard team.

- Ivory Coast: According to OPTA stats, Ivory Coast’s Yan Diomande ($5.9m) is the only teenager to complete eight dribbles in his first two World Cup apps since Lionel Messi (10) in 2006. The 19-year-old Ivorian winger has created seven chances (six from open play) for the Elephants and has been unlucky to register either a goal or assist against Ecuador and Germany. With Côte d’Ivoire’s final game against Curaçao, Diomande will be ready to change his fortune and score, aiding his nation to secure qualification.
- Morocco: Despite Ismael Saibari being the top scorer for the Atlas Lions, Brahim Diaz ($6.4m) brings an additional incentive of being on penalties and carries the creative blanket to also provide assists in the attack.
