Welcome to our FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2026 – Best MD2 Differentials to Target! In this post, we’ll be examining the best differential options for MD2 of the World Cup, focusing on players with low ownership who can offer high returns! We’ll be selecting players with good fixtures based on form, stats, and expected data.
REMINDER: In FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2026, players under 5% ownership that score 4+ points in a given Match Day will get a bonus 2 points called ‘scouting bonus’ – So differentials are truly worth their weight in gold!
Due to the volume of teams (and therefore players) playing at this World Cup, these group stage differential posts are going to be a bit lengthier than our normal differentials pieces, and will be organised by position (about 3-5 options per position). MD2 Differentials for FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2026
MD2 Differentials – Goalkeepers
Bounou ($4.7 – 3.5%) – Morocco
Morocco wowed the world when they took on Brazil in MD1, getting off to a flying start and putting Ancelotti’s side to the test in the early stages of that match. It should come as no surprise, really, as Morocco were a penalty kick away from the AFCON title (technically, they did win it by forfeit) and were knocked out in the semi-finals at the last World Cup – they are a good side. Their energy, press, and cohort of technically gifted midfielders make them difficult opposition, and Scotland may well struggle in their MD2 showdown. Morocco limited Brazil to just 5 shots on target and 1 big chance, and were defensively solid throughout. Scotland, on the other hand, were pretty abject against Haiti, managing just 9 shots and 2 on target.
Suzuki ($4.3 – 1.9%) – Japan
As with Morocco, Japan showed up against the big dogs in MD1. The Samurai Blue limited the Netherlands to 0.78xG across the 90 and 0 big chances. Japan sat deep for large parts of the game, allowing the Netherlands to pass it side to side endlessly before cutting a stray pass out and keeping possession themselves. Japan were astute both on and off the ball and could be an excellent side to target now that their most tricky fixture is out of the way. At just 1.9% ownership, Suzuki is a great shout for MD2. Also, Tunisia (Japan’s opponents in MD2) have just sacked their manager, so…
FACT: ALL of the top 3 highest scoring goalkeepers in MD1 benefitted from the Scouting bonus (Gunn 9, Fofana 9, Beach 11)
Galindez ($4.2 – 4.7%) – Ecuador
Galindez has gone up by 0.7% in ownership between last week’s post and this one, though he is still (just) under the 5% threshold. Unfortunately, Ecuador did not live up to the pre-tournament hype, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat against the Ivory Coast in MD1. To be fair, the Ivory Coast boasts a swathe of attacking talent which any international teams would be eager to have, but still, it was somewhat disappointing for his small owner base. What’s more frustrating is that he managed only 3 points, 1 point short of the 4+ necessary to qualify for the scouting bonus! With Curucao up next, a side who shipped 7 to Germany and looked pretty awful bar a 17 minute spell in the first half (they also had just 8 shots and 0.41xG), Galindez remains a solid GK pick…

MD2 Differentials – Defenders
Llorente ($5.5 – 4.8%) – Spain
What’s this? A sub 5% starting Spanish defender? Your eyes do not deceive you, dear reader, Llorente is still (just) sub 5%, but hey, what’s Fantasy sport without a bit of jeopardy?… If he remains under 5% ownership, then Llorente is a no-brainer for MD2, considering his spot in the team is nailed (at least for this game). All of Spain’s other defensive options are over the threshold, so it’s worth getting Llorente just in case. Even if he does go over, he’s an attacking option for one of the best teams in the tournament. Everyone should have at least one Spanish defender in their team, and Llorente is a great option for their MD2 fixture against Saudi Arabia.
Konsa ($4.8 – 1%) – England
In a similar vein, Konsa is a starting defender for England and is well under 5% going into this MD2 fixture against Ghana. While England have not yet played (they play on Wednesday night), it is safe to assume that they will be a fairly conservative side – solid in defense and steady in attack (making the most of set pieces and mistakes etc.). None of England’s defensive options are particularly exciting from an attacking perspective (James is perhaps the most exciting), so Konsa is as good as any. He was included in our defenders to target piece pre-tournament due to England’s astonishing defensive record going into the tournament, and was only omitted from last week’s piece due to England’s tricky first fixture against Croatia.
FACT: England didn’t concede a single goal across their 8 qualification games, and Konsa played every single minute
Coufal ($3.6 – 3%) – Czechia
Coufal remains an excellent pick for WC Fantasy managers as he is a budget enabler under 5% owned and is ‘on set-pieces’. We predicted pre-tournament that Coufal would be a major set-piece taker for Czechia this tournament, and his responsibilities are numerous. Coufal took 3 corners in Czechia’s MD1 loss to South Korea and created 1 big chance, producing an assist for Czechia’s only goal. His side relies heavily on set-pieces for their chance creation and goals, and he is a crucial part of their attack in that sense. Their opponents in MD2 are South Africa, a side that was very poor in MD1 against Mexico, producing very little of note in attack and looking wide open and lacking physicality in defense.
Schlotterbeck ($5.3 – %4.3) – Germany
Germany were unlucky not to come away with a clean sheet against Curucao in MD1, limiting the small nation to just 8 shots and 0.41xG across the 90. Nevertheless, Schlotterbeck came away with an 11-point haul in MD1 thanks to his goal and the scouting bonus. He was included in our MD1 picks for many of the reasons outlined above for Konsa and Llorente – starting defender for a big nation but sub 5%, and delivered both in theory and in practice on this promise. I’m less confident that he’ll be able to replicate his attacking success in MD2, but you never know, regardless he’s a great option for Germany’s MD2 fixture against the Ivory Coast.
ALTERNATIVE: Brown is another one to consider from Germany. Highest scoring defender in MD1, less than 5% owned. But his spot in the team could be challenged by Raum. More than likely, he starts MD2…

MD2 Differentials – Midfielders
Salah ($10 – 4.4%) – Egypt
Somehow, Salah is sub 5% owned, and Egypt face the lowest-ranked team in the tournament – New Zealand – in MD2. Salah is Egypt’s talisman, scoring 3 goals in 3 games in their qualifying campaign in 2025 and 9 goals and 3 assists in 10 matches for Egypt this calendar year. If Egypt score, you can bet that Salah is likely to be involved, so for this match against their easiest opponent in the group and the lowest-ranked team in the competition, Salah is a great pick. He may well, of course, shoot up in ownership should he score in MD1, so watch this space…
Nakamura ($5.5 – 0.4%) – Japan
Can you tell I was impressed by Japan…? Nakamura took the most shots of any player in the game between the Netherlands and Japan in MD1, as well as creating one chance for his team in his role as a winger/wingback. Nakamura scored the first equalising goal for Japan, hitting a deflected shot past Flekken early in the second half. Nakamura averaged around 0.65 goal involvements per 90 minutes in Japan’s World Cup qualifying campaign, eventually cementing himself as the first-choice option on that left-hand side. He should have some more space and opportunity to get forwards against a Tunisia side that shipped 5 against Sweden and then swiftly sacked their manager post MD1…
Vargas ($6.8 – 0.5%) – Switzerland
There was a lot of hype around Vargas going into the tournament, and he demonstrated why in that MD1 performance. Vargas created 5 chances (the most in the match), and had 3 shots, missing 2 big chances. His xGI across the 90 was 0.95 – it’s a shame that he didn’t actually come away with an attacking contribution in the end. Regardless his potential was demonstrated, and at just 0.5% ownership, he is clearly a great option going into Switzerland’s MD2 fixture against a Bosnia side which were pretty lackluster at both ends of the field in MD1.
FACT: Vargas produced 4 goal involvements across Switzerland’s 6 World Cup qualifying games, the joint second most in the squad.
Diaz ($6.4 – 2.2%) – Morocco
Diaz was one of the outstanding players in Morocco’s draw with Brazil in MD1. The Real Madrid winger produced a sumptuous assist for Saibari’s goal to put Morocco ahead in the first half of their MD1 fixture, and was giving Brazil’s fullbacks problems throughout. Diaz took the joint most shots in that match, as well as creating 2 chances and 1 big chance. The Moroccan has clearly recovered from his AFCON final dismay earlier this year and looks to be an exciting option for WC fantasy managers going into Morocco’s second group game against Scotland. Haiti, the second-lowest-rated team in the tournament, managed 15 shots and over 1xG against Scotland in MD1, outplaying the tartan army for large portions of the match – if Haiti can do that, imagine what Morocco can do…
ALTERNATIVE: Consider Saibari ($6.8 – 0.7%) – he started up front for Morocco against Brazil and scored a wonderful goal, meaning he will likely keep his place in the team going forwards.
Nmecha ($5.6 – 0.4%) – Germany
The definition of an all-action midfielder, Nmecha scored a huge 13 points in MD1 thanks to his goal, penalty win, tackles, and of course, the scouting bonus on top. Nmecha took the joint most shots (4) of any player in the match, as well as contributing defensively for his side. He was given the space and opportunity to get forwards against Curucao in MD1, and while that might not quite be the case against Ivory Coast in MD2, he will still have opportunities and has shown himself to be a versatile points-scoring option in World Cup fantasy.

MD2 Differentials – Forwards
Balogun ($6 – 1.6%) – USA
What a performance that was from the United States! The hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2026 put on a real show in their MD1 fixture against Paraguay, putting 4 past the South American country. Balogun was the spearhead of the USA attack in that game, contributing 2 goals to his side’s victory before coming off prematurely due to an injury (though it didn’t look serious and he should be fit for MD2). Pulisic will get the plaudits, and quite rightly so, but Balogun scored a pretty sensational goal late in the second half to add to his earlier one. The USA face an Australia side that performed a classic smash and grab against Turkey in MD1, and they’ll need their goalkeeper to put in an even better performance to keep this US side out for 90+ minutes…
Valencia ($5.9 – 0.7%) – Ecuador
Another Ecuadorian is added to the list for their favourable fixture against Curacao in MD2. As mentioned previously, Curacao put up pretty awful defensive numbers against Germany in MD1 and looked down and out come the end of the match – it’ll be a real struggle for them to pick themselves up again for this one… Valencia was a hero of the last World Cup, scoring 3 goals for his side and becoming Ecuador’s leading goalscorer at the World Cup finals! He is getting on a bit now, but still represents a threat for Ecuador and is their premier attacking option. He put up 8 goal involvements in 15 games in qualifying for Ecuador, scoring a goal every other game (0.51G/90). When it comes to MD2 punts, Valencia is certainly up there!
Liam Millar ($5.1 – 0.1%) – Canada
A more underground pick for you, Championship fans out there, Liam Millar completes this list of MD2 differential picks as Canada take on Qatar in MD2. Millar was a standout in Canada’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia, constantly offering an attacking outlook down the left-hand side and looking to take on his man. The stats don’t look great (he created 1 chance and had 0 shots), but trust me, he passed the eye test… Millar isn’t going to be your main forward for MD2, but as Canada are playing in the 3rd earliest game in MD2, he’s a decent pick to start in your team and then rotate for one of the later playing/more expensive forward options.
ALTERNATIVE: Consider Ali Ahmed ($4.9 – 0.1%), who came on for Canada and changed the game late on! He may not start, but he certainly makes a difference with his creativity on the pitch!
Final Note: I had a dream before Germany’s match in MD1 that Undav would come on and score the winner (he came on and scored Germany’s 7th as well as providing 2 assists). So if I have any more premonitions, I’ll add them to the bottom of this post…
