Welcome to our MD1 Differentials for World Cup Fantasy 2026! In this post we’ll be examining the best differential options for MD1 of the World Cup, focusing on players with low ownership who can offer high returns! We’ll be selecting players with good fixtures based on form, stats and expected data.

REMINDER: In Fifa World Cup Fantasy 2026, players under 5% ownership that score 4+ points in a given Match Day will get a bonus 2 points called ‘scouting bonus’ – So differentials are truly worth their weight in gold!

Due to the volume of teams (and therefore players) playing at this world cup, these group stage differential posts are going to be a bit lengthier than our normal differentials pieces, and will be organised by position (about 3-5 options per position). MD1 Differentials for Fifa World Cup Fantasy 2026

MD1 Differentials – Goalkeepers

Galindez ($4.2 – 4%) – Ecuador

Ecuador have been touted as one of the ‘dark horses’ of this world cup by (seemingly) everyone who has a podcast, so it only seems right to include their goalkeeper on our list of differential options considering Galindez is a fairly popular (though still under the crucial 5% mark) asset. Galindez started 12/18 qualifiers for Ecuador and kept 10 clean sheets in the process. He also started the latest friendly and is likely to be the first choice at the World Cup. Ecuador are a solid defensive unit and play Ivory Coast in MD1 so Galindez is certainly one to consider as a MD1 Differential.

Gunn ($3.6 – 1.7%) – Scotland

‘No Scotland No Party’ – we had to include at least one Scottish player in this list… Gunn will likely start against Haiti in Scotland’s eagerly anticipated first group stage game against Haiti on Saturday night/Sunday morning and at jsut 1.7% owned, Gunn will surely go into this fixture as a MD1 differentials option. Scotland have a tricky group, facing Morocco and Brazil later in the group stage, but will fancy their chances against Haiti on MD1. The Tartan army recently beat Bolivia 4-0 and Curacao 4-1 in their last two friendly matches, suggesting that they are at least somewhat defensively solid… Robertson will be another popular defensive option, but at 5% ownership at time of writing, he will likely go into that first game over the threshold…

Nyland ($4.2 – 2.5%) – Norway

Facing Iraq on MD1 Norway’s Nyland could be a great option for those looking to go differential in the goalkeeping department for world cup fantasy. Unfortunately Norway have two tougher fixtures after MD1, playing Senegal and then France, but their is surely a clean sheet on the cards in their first game of the tournament. Norway are a very versatile outfit and will likely change their style of play to suit the opponent – expect them to dominate the ball against Iraq but play more of a counter attacking style against the likes of France. Norway kept 4 clean sheets in their qualifying campaign and conceded more than 1 goal on only one occasion. Another one on the ‘dark horse’ list…

MD1 Differentials – Defenders

Schlotterbeck ($5.3 – 3.7%) – Germany

When selecting defenders (and goalkeepers) for this differentials list – the most important thing is clean sheet probability. If a defender plays 60+ minutes and keeps a clean sheet then they will get the scouting bonus of 2 points (presuming they are under 5% owned that is). Schlotterbeck is the ideal candidate for this list therefore as he plays for one of the ‘top’ teams at this world cup, is likely to start at left back and is currently under 5% owned. Raum should be considered, but he has not been starting games for Germany of late and is thus omitted from this list. Germany kept 4 clean sheets in their 6 qualifying games for this world cup and face Curacao (the second lowest ranked team in the tournament) in MD1.

De Cuyper ($4.7 – 4.4%) – Belgium

De Cuyper showed a lot of promise for Brighton this season, contributing 5 goal involvements for his team in the premier league this season and showing himself to be an able premier league quality defender. De Cuyper will be starting for Belgium at LB in this world cup and could be on some corners for his side (though he is not the first choice option). Belgium face Egypt in MD1, a side that crashed out of Afcon in the semi-finals having scored just 3 goals in the group stage and failing to score in either their semi-final match or the match for 3rd place. Salah will of course offer a threat, but De Cuyper has locked the egyptian down in the premier league before…

The only caveat with De Cuyper is that he is a minutes risk- Making him a high risk, high reward pick. He didn’t start the latest friendly(June 6) vs Tunisia, where Castagne was preferred in the back 4. Castagne offered much defensive stability, which was praised by manager Rudi Garcia as well.

However, it could change opposition to opposition (based on matchups), which makes De Cuyper an exciting but risky punt. An example was seen in the previous friendly vs Croatia, where De Cuyper was preferred when Belgium played with a back 3.

De Cuyper vs Croatia(June 2 Friendly):

FACT: De Cuyper contributed 4 goal involvements to Belgium in their world cup qualifying campaign.

Hincapie ($4.7 – 3.5%) – Ecuador

Another Ecuadorian makes the list – this time it’s Arsenal’s Hincapie. While. Estupinan is a far more attractive way into the Ecuadorian defense, considering his set piece duties and significant goal threat, he is not a dead-set to start in MD1 against the Ivory Coast. Due to Hincapie’s positional flexibility, he is more likely to start and therefore makes this list. Ecuador conceded just 2 goals across their 12 match qualifying campaign for this tournament, keeping 5 clean sheets in a row to tip them over the line and into this world cup.

Vasquez ($4.7 – 2.2%)

Mexico go into the tournament as the favourite host nation and are seen as the most likely to progress the furthest out of the three (USA, Canada and Mexico). Vasques has established himself as a solid defender in europe in recent years, turning out good performances for Genoa in recent times and is thus Mexico’s go to starting CB option. Reyes and Gallardo could also be interesting ultra-differential picks for future matches, but we’re going for solidity and security for MD1 and Vasques certainly offers that…

FACT: Mexico conceded just 3 goals on their way to their CANCACAF victory last summer, conceding just once (in the final) between MD2 and the final.

MD1 Differentials – Midfielders

James Rodriguez ($6.5 – 4.4%) – Colombia

Coming in just under the 5% ownership threshold is world cup legend himself James Rodriguez. Known for his wonder goal in 2014 against Uruguay, James has had a long career at the top of the european and international game – this will likely be his last world cup. Rodriguez produced 3 goals, 7 assists in the qualifiers, averaging 0.73 Goal Involvements/90, the third highest GI/90 amongst south american midfielders in qualifying. Colombia face Uzbekistan in MD1.

Bruno Guimaraes ($6.8 -2.0%) – Brazil

This is your reminder that midfielders score points for both tackles and chances created in Fifa World Cup Fantasy 2026, meaning that all-rounders like Bruno G are essential in our teams. Bruno G is a dead-set to start for Brazil in MD1 against Morocco and offers all round point scoring potential. Furthermore he’s on some set-pieces and will likely play 60+ minutes every game. The fixture isn’t great, but Bruno G could be a powerful set and forget differential for the group stage with two easier games against Scotland and Haiti in MD2 and MD3.

Doue ($7.5 – 3.3%) – France

It is my humble opinion that Doue will start against Senegal in MD1. I am aware that this is a somewhat contreversial opinion and may be proved disastrously wrong, but I will stand by it until I am proved otherwise… Dembele and Olise are sure to start alongside Mbappe for France and, according to multiple sources including the Athletic, the totally football show and others, doue is the most likely to line up alongside them. Perhaps proving this theory correct was France’s starting XI against Northern Ireland, which had this exact quartet line up for the first time in recent friendly matches in what was France’s final game before their MD1 fixture against Senegal. Fantastic player, elite attacker and likely to start for the best attack at the world cup – count me in…

FACT: Doue created 3 chances and had 1 shot on target in ~60 minutes in France’s final friendly against Northern Ireland

Baena ($6 – 0.2%) – Spain

In a similar vein, Baena will surely start at LW for Spain in MD1 with Williams and Yamal still sidelined through injury. The talk is that both will be ready to be included in the squad for Spain’s MD1 fixture against Cape Verde, but, having been left out of their most recent (and final) friendly against Peru, it seems unlikely that either will start. Baena has proved himself to be a capable understudy and has earned the trust of the manager. Furthermore, it looks like he will be on corner-taking duties in the absence of Yamal and thus could be an excellent differential option.

Odegaard ($7.7 – 4.6%) – Norway

Odegaard sits just below the threshold for differential players (5%) and is at 4.6% ownership at the time of writing but is an excellent asset for world cup fantasy regardless – particularly in MD1 for Norway’s very attractive fixture against Norway. Odegaard managed to produce 7 assists in Norway’s qualifying campaign and benefits from a more ‘free’ role in the attack than what he is used to at club level. He created 25 chances and averaged 0.75xA/90 in qualifying, a rate which he could definitely carry over into their MD1 game against a weaker Iraq side. Haaland will get all of the praise and will be a popular option, but Odegaard could be a great pick for MD1 too…

MD1 Differentials – Forwards

Luis Suarez ($5.7 – 2.6%) – Colombia

No not that Luis Suarez – this one plays for Colombia and is definitely one to watch at this year’s world cup. Suarez had a fantastic season for Sporting in the 25/26 season, scoring 28 goals and providing 6 assists across 32 matches in Liga Portugal. He’s scored 1 goal in Colombia’s recent two friendly matches, hitting the back of the net against Costa Rica in early June. He’s a great all round striker and could be a nightmare for defenders in a front four alongside Rodriguez, Diaz and Arias – what an attack!

Embolo ($7.5 – %2.6) – Switzerland

Switzerland face hosts of the 2022 world cup Qatar in their MD1 fixture and Embolo presents himself as a solid attacking option for those of us looking for a differential for our forward lines in FIFA World Cup Fantasy. Embolo scored just 2 goals at the Euros 2 years ago but it should be pointed out that he had to work his way into the team having started as a bench option for Switzerland going into the competition. Ndoye should also be considered in this section, as he has been in excellent form and has been an ever present for Switzerland for a long time now across a variety of attacking roles.

FACT: Embolo was Switzerland’s top scorer across their World Cup qualifying campaign (4 goals in 6 matches).

Jimenez ($7 – 2.8%) – Mexico

It really shocked me that Jimenez is owned by under 3% of managers going into Mexico’s first game against South Africa. As I mentioned earlier they are the favourite home nation and are basically playing at home for their fixture in MD1. Mexico have a long and storied history of world cup success and will be hoping to right the wrongs of their 2022 group stage exit in Qatar. With a slew of awesome wingers and midfielders to provide for him, Jimenez could be a lethal option in attack and should definitely be more popular than he currently is!

Matheus Cunha ($7.3 -3.5%) – Brazil

Cunha is a great differential option for many of the same reasons Doue is – if he has a starting spot in that Brazil attack then he is virtually guaranteed goals. Brazil play a strange 4-2-4 formation where one of the striker spots is taken up by a certain Vinicius Jr and the other by a rotating cast of very different players; Endrick, Thiago, Paqueta and of course Cunha. While Joao Pedro’s absence could boost Cunha’s chances of playing for Brazil, we should expect rotation and he is certainly not as guaranteed as Doue or the other options on this list. He’s probably worth a punt though, especially considering Brazil’s favourable group!
