Back in December 2022, we witnessed Argentina lift their third World Cup trophy in Qatar! However, this time, we are travelling to North America where Mexico, Canada and the United States of America will co-host this special tournament, which will climax at the final set for New Jersey Stadium, New York, USA.
Hey, guys! Welcome to our pre-tournament preview, where we will be highlighting key midfielders to consider for the Official FIFA World Cup Fantasy. Adewale covers this week’s series, sharing his insights on key creators, talismanic figures and top differentials who could boost your fantasy selections this summer.

There are a plethora of outstanding midfielders in the upcoming FIFA World Cup contest. We have the likes of Brazil’s Vinicius Jr, USA’s Christian Pulisic, Belgium’s Jeremy Doku, Germany’s electric Florian Wirtz, and present Ballon d’Or/Champions League winner Ousmane Dembele representing France.
However, unlike FPL and other fantasy football games, midfielders in World Cup Fantasy gain an extra advantage in the following areas:
- Goals Scored: Any goal scored by a midfielder earns you 6 points
- Chances created: For every two chances created, a midfielder earns an extra 1 point
- Tackles made: For every three successful tackles, a midfielder earns an extra 1 point

Other key point metrics used to score midfielders:
- Winning a penalty earns 2 points.
- For every assist provided, a midfielder gets 3 points, while for each clean sheet kept, midfielders earn 1 point.
- A goal scored from a direct free-kick earns an additional 1 point and
- Scouting bonus: Players with less than 5% ownership who earn more than 4 points in a game are awarded an extra 2 points.
With this in mind, here are our top six recommended fantasy assets who encompass the specific qualities to be a point magnet for your team between Matchdays 1 and 3 of the group stage games.

Raphinha Dias (Brazil) – $8.2m | TSB: 21.5% ownership
Group Stage Fixtures: Morocco, Haiti and Scotland
Brazil is stocked with a lot of quality players; however, one player who has been the most consistent for Carlo Ancelotti during the World Cup qualifiers is Raphinha. The Barcelona captain made seven goal contributions (5 goals and two assists) against Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, and Colombia in Group A of the World Cup qualifiers and is favoured to be Brazil’s no. 1 penalty taker ahead of his teammate, Vinicius Jr. ($10m).
My only predominant worry around Raphinha is likely rotations in his minutes if Brazil appears to secure qualification to the knockout stage after Matchday 2. With the inclusion of Neymar Jr. in the World Cup squad, it’s almost possible to presume Raphinha’s minutes might be impacted going forward. However, I have confidence he won’t lose his place, as Rapha featured in the recent preliminary friendly against Panama and is not far away from hitting 40 caps for Brazil.
When to Target: According to our World Cup 2026: Predicted Goals Model, Brazil is expected to produce 6.46 xG (expected goals) in Group C and is the favorite to finish in first place against rivals Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. Based on this, I believe Raphinha is an essential asset to have throughout the group stage, but keep your ears peeled for possible rotations by Matchday 3 or plan wisely to activate your Wildcard booster to avoid such a hurdle.

Bruno Fernandes (Portugal) – $8.5m | TSB: 48.8% ownership
Group Stage Fixtures: DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia
When covering international football, I tend to shy away from club form comparison, as the World Cup is a unique contest in itself. Nevertheless, I will have to make an exemption for ‘Portuguese Magnifico’ Bruno Fernandes, who recently broke the Premier League assist record (21) and won the 2025/26 EPL Playmaker award.
The midfield maestro priced at $8.5m is majorly on set-piece duty for his nation, be it, corners, freekicks and in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, he plays a key role for penalties. In his last three international appearances, Bruno has contributed six goal contributions (3 goals and 3 assists) for Portugal, and he will be eager to bring his solid form to the World Cup stage.
When to Target: Bruno Fernandes is a key creator for his nation and is definitely worth keeping in your fantasy team throughout Portugal’s run in the World Cup. In addition, he is the second-most-owned asset in World Cup Fantasy, emphasizing further why he is indispensable.

Lamine Yamal (Spain) – $10m | TSB: 43.5% ownership
Group Stage Fixtures: Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay
Spain, the Euro 2024 champions, are here to stake a claim to the World Cup title, and this will make it Lamine Yamal’s first World Cup appearance at just 18 years old. Barcelona’s sensational wonderkid struggled with injuries at the end of the La Liga season but his overall 2025/26 season 27 goal contributions (16 goals and 11 assists) would be a key addition to Spain’s attack when La Roja take on World Cup debutants Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia in their first two opening group games.

When to Target: At $10m, Lamine Yamal’s price is just $0.5m shy of premium forwards like Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe. It could prove difficult fitting him in our teams; however, with the 12th man booster, Yamal would be a must-have asset between Matchday 1 and 2. Let’s hope he stays physically fit for the majority of the World Cup.

Luis Dรญaz (Colombia) – $8.1m | TSB: 18.6% ownership
Group Stage Fixtures: Uzbekistan, DR Congo and Portugal
During the World Cup CONMEBOL qualifiers, Luis Dรญaz finished as Colombia’s top goal scorer with seven goals to his name. The Bayern Munich left winger has been dubbed one of the best transfer signings in the 2025/26 season, as he made 45 goal contributions (26 goals and 19 assists) across all competitions. At $8.1m, Diaz comes as a bargain pick who will very much help Colombia get as far as the Round of 16.
When to Target: Group K looks like a top group on paper. DR Congo from Africa is no pushover, and Portugal are favorites to win the group. The best time to bring in Luis Diaz would be against World Cup debutants Uzbekistan; however, as a big-game player, there’s a huge risk-reward benefit if fantasy managers keep him between Matchday 1 and 2.

Michael Olise (France) – $8.2m | TSB: 24.2% ownership
Group Stage Fixtures: Senegal, Iraq, Norway
France is presently the no. 1 ranked nation in the world, and with Michael Olise participating in his first World Cup tournament, the 2018 World Cup winners are confident this summer they will lift it again. Olise was crowned 2025/26 Bundesliga player of the season and has been a key addition to Didier Deschamps’ squad in the UEFA Nations League and World Cup qualifiers.
When to Target: As a fantasy asset, Olise brings a unique flair to the game, as he can feature as both a winger and the No. 10 who solely creates for leading striker Kylian Mbappe and other attackers around him. However, we might need to be a bit patient to see him feature among the goals more, as his price tag of $9.5m is too pricey and perhaps worth having on your Wildcard booster in Matchday 2.

Mohamed Salah (Egypt) – $10m | TSB: 6.9% ownership
Group Stage Fixtures: Belgium, New Zealand and IR Iran
The Egyptian king is here! Mohamed Salah was Egypt’s most influential player in helping them secure a place in the World Cup after making 12 goal contributions (9 goals and 3 assists) during the World Cup qualifiers. From a fantasy perspective, Mo Salah’s pedigree makes him one of the main go-to African players to select, as he is predominantly on freekicks, corners and penalty duty for the Pharaohs.
When to Target: At $10m, there is no upside in having Mo Salah against a tough Belgium side, which might end in a draw or defeat for Egypt. Nonetheless, from Matchday 2 to 3, Egypt has a higher likelihood of winning against group rivals New Zealand and Iran. Thus, saving one of your wildcard or 12th man boosters to fit in Salah seems like a foolproof plan to stay ahead of your mini-league rivals.

Honourable Mentions
Our listed players above are not the only go-to assets to consider; here are a few other picks who could be worth selecting.
- Argentina: Enzo Fernandez might not be a prolific goal scorer for Argentina, but he brings a mix of key tackles won and created chances, but he needs to prove himself at $7.5m. Nico Paz ($5.9m) and Valentin Barco ($6.2m) are high on the watchlist as they could break into La Albiceleste’s selection. If Argentina can secure six points in their first two games, we could see either player benefit from team rotation against Jordan in Matchday 3.
- Scotland: Scott McTominay ($6.5m) is a solid one-week punt for his nation in Group C’s tie against Haiti.
- Tรผrkiye: 21-year-old Arda Gรผler ($7m) recently won the UEFA Champions League Revelation of the Season award with his club, Real Madrid. Gรผler shares set-piece duty with Hakan รalhanoฤlu, contributing a goal and 4 assists during the World Cup qualifiers, and would be pivotal in aiding the Crescent Stars secure a spot in the Round of 32 from Group D.
