FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2026 – Overview
FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2026 shares many similarities with FPL. The basic rules remain pretty much the same…
Similarities
- Pick a Squad of 15 Players (Initially $100m budget)
- Captain scores double points
- Chips (or boosters as they are known in WC Fantasy) are available
- Points scored for goals, assists, clean sheets, and more…
Unlike FPL, however, there are a few key differences which can make a big difference…
Differences
- Substitutions and Captaincy changes can be made mid-matchday – the deadline for such changes comes at the end of the MD rather than the beginning, like in FPL.
- Players will not rise and fall in price as they do in FPL.
- Chips (Boosters) are different
- The budget and team limits change after the group stage (budget increases, and you can select more and more players per team as the tournament progresses)
- Points scoring is a bit different (though the basics remain the same), e.g., bonus points for differentials, Shots on target, Chances created, Tackles…
Let’s explore all of this in a bit more detail…
2026 World Cup Fantasy – Initial Squad Selection
To begin with, one must select a squad of 15 players (two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, and three forwards). Managers have an initial $100m budget to play with and are limited to three players maximum from each nation throughout the group stage. Players range from $10.5m to $3.5m, and prices are fixed, meaning there will be no price rises/falls at all across the tournament. Unlimited free changes (transfers and substitutions) can be made to this squad prior to the MD1 deadline on Thursday, 11th June.

Substitutions and Captaincy
Substitutions can be made as normal prior to the start of a MD as is standard practice in FPL, however they can also be made under a specific set of circumstances while the Match Day is ‘live’ (after the start of the first match of the matchday but before the end of the final match of the round).
Manual Substitutions
“You can replace a player from your starting 11 with someone from your bench, as long as the bench player hasn’t played yet and your new lineup still follows a valid formation.”
- A player that has already played that MD cannot be substituted into the starting XI.
- Players that are currently playing (‘live’ players) cannot be substituted into or out of the starting XI.
- You can swap two players that are yet to play into and out of your starting XI as many times as you want.
Auto-Subs
ALTERNATIVELY: As in FPL, if one of your starting players does not play, an auto-sub will occur. This means that a player on your bench (prioritised 1-3 as ordered on your bench) will come on for the non-playing starter.
It must be noted that auto-subs will only occur if you have NOT made manual substitutions. In other words, by making manual substitutions, auto-subs will not occur at all.
Captaincy
Captaincy (and VC) can be changed an unlimited number of times prior to the start of a matchday (as in FPL), but captaincy changes can also be made under a certain set of circumstances while the MatchDay is ‘live’.
Simply put, the same circumstances that apply to making manual substitutions also apply to captaincy in Fifa World Cup Fantasy 2026…
- You can swap captaincy from a player whose team has completed their match to a player who has not yet played.
- You cannot swap the captaincy onto a player who has already completed their match (obviously).
- You can only put the captaincy on a player in your playing XI (as in FPL).
PLEASE NOTE: THESE RULES DO NOT CHANGE ACROSS THE TOURNAMENT

World Cup Fantasy Beginner’s Guide – Transfers
The basics of transfers in Fifa World Cup Fantasy 2026 work the same as they do in FPL. You can ‘transfer out’ one or multiple players in your team for other players in the WC, so long as you remain ‘in budget’. Unlimited transfers can be made to your team prior to the MD1 deadline (11/06). The team player limits, budget, and number of free transfers fluctuate as the tournament progresses…
Group stage (MD1-MD3):
- 2 Free Transfers per MD (-3 points for any additional transfers)
- $100m budget (no price changes)
- Max 3 players per country
Round of 32:
- Unlimited Transfers (no penalties)
- $105m budget (no price changes)
- Max 3 players per country
Round of 16:
- 4 Free Transfers (-3 for any additional transfers)
- $105m budget (no price changes)
- Max 4 players per country
Quarter Finals:
- 4 Free Transfers (-3 for any additional transfers)
- $105m budget (no price changes)
- Max 5 players per country
Semi Finals:
- 5 Free Transfers (-3 for any additional transfers)
- $105m budget (no price changes)
- Max 6 players per country
Final:
- 6 Free Transfers (-3 for any additional transfers)
- $105m budget (no price changes)
- Max 8 players per country
While these rules may seem daunting, all you really need to remember is that free transfers, player nation limits, and the budget increases across the tournament as more and more countries are eliminated. It will be pretty clear within the game what these limits are on any given matchday.

- Scouting bonus: If any of your players score more than 4 points in a match and are in fewer than 5% of all teams’ selection.
2026 World Cup Fantasy Chips / Boosters

- 12th man: Select a player from your bench to score points for your team in a given round (bench boost, but just for one player)
- Maximum Captaincy: The player who scores the most points in your starting XI in a given round is automatically assigned the captaincy.
- Qualification Booster: +2 points for any player in your team that progresses to the next round of the tournament or wins the final (only available from Round of 32 onwards).
- Mystery Booster: This booster will be revealed once Round 3 locks and the Round of 32 opens.
Explainer: What do these rules mean?
These substitution and captaincy rules are evidently more forgiving than those of FPL, but still require a bit of planning prior to each deadline. Substituting players or swapping the captaincy is still somewhat of a gamble, but it allows for a mid-matchday engagement which is somewhat absent in FPL.
Some tips on how to exploit these rules:
- Always keep players that play later in the MD on your bench, even if they are more premium options or ‘guaranteed’ points scorers. This allows you to basically have more than 11 players play and to discard the ones that blank.
- The same goes for captaincy – If you’re stuck between two or three options, go for the one that plays earliest in the round and then swap off/keep them as captain depending on their returns.
- Stay on top of the deadlines and kick-off times – remember that players that are live cannot be swapped in/out of the team (or have any captaincy alterations). All changes must be made to players that have either already played or are yet to play.
- Keep track of differential targets and exploit low ownership players through the ‘scouting bonus’.
- Targeting free kick-ers or players that rank highly for tackles in order to maximise bonus points that others may not access.
- 2 of the 5 Chips are only available from RO32 onwards – don’t wait to use all of your chips later in the tournament, you could use one or two in the group stages.
- Remember that you get unlimited transfers after the group stage matches have ended.
