FPL Gameweek 28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold, & Sell

GW27 wasn’t about explosive teams, it was about where points came from.

  • Arsenal smashed Spurs, but the biggest hauls weren’t from Saka or Odegaard
  • Liverpool won, but Salah wasn’t needed
  • City scored twice, and Haaland returned, but City defenders topped the week
  • Mid-table chaos rewarded low-ownership structure players

This tells us something important for GW28:

  • Chasing last week’s points will bury you.
  • Targeting roles + fixture leverage will separate you.

Except Gyökeres and Virgil, every double-digit scorer sat below 8% ownership.

That’s not chaos. That’s pressure revealing structure.

Managers didn’t “miss obvious picks” in GW27. They chased certainty in uncertain fixtures and GW27 rewarded:

  • Defensive involvement
  • Secondary attackers
  • Process over popularity

Which brings us to GW28.

So no fluff. No hedge words. Straight into BUY–HOLD–SELL, sponsored by …. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want.

FPL GW28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

Dango Ouattara (£5.9m) – MID, Brentford – 1.6% TSB

Brentford’s golden fixture run hasn’t arrived, it has already begun.

Burnley are not just poor defensively. They are structurally broken.

They rank 20th for:

  • Shots conceded
  • Shots in the box conceded
  • Shots on target conceded
  • Big chances conceded
  • NPxGC
  • xGC
  • Expected clean sheets
  • Goals conceded
  • Actual clean sheets

Top Midfielders(Less than 7.0 million) for Goal Involvements/90- Dango ranks third:

This isn’t a weak defence. It’s an invitation.

The Schade vs Dango debate dominated last week. I stayed firmly in the Dango camp, and GW27 backed the process even if the points didn’t land.

  • xGI: 0.99
  • Constant box involvement
  • Primary threat in transition

Managers who sold panicked. Managers who held were unlucky, not wrong.

And let’s not forget the reverse fixture: 12 points. One goal. One assist. Statement performance.

Same role. Same opponent profile. Even better fixture context.

Verdict: BUY.
Form, fixture, and role are all screaming the same thing.

James Hill (£4.1m) – DEF, Bournemouth – 5.4% TSB

A £3.9m Hill began starting matches since GW19.

Since becoming a regular starter from GW19, among all defenders, he ranks:

  • 1st for assists
  • 1st for defensive contribution points
  • 3rd for total FPL points

Top Defenders for DEFCON since GW19:

Upcoming fixtures: SUN | BRE | BUR

This is not about name value. It’s about zones, minutes, and involvement.

Encouraging fixtures, secure starts & attacking returns from unexpected areas.

This is exactly how low-ownership defenders quietly break seasons open.

Verdict: BUY.
Differential. Durable. Dangerous.

FPL GW28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD

Igor Thiago (£7.1m) – FWD, Brentford – 32.2% TSB

Igor Thiago is the 2nd most transferred out FWD this week.

Watching managers sell Igor Thiago right now feels like watching someone jump off a rollercoaster just before the big drop, because the climb felt uncomfortable.

Nothing has gone wrong.
Nothing has changed.
The ride is only starting.

Top Players for xGI/90 this season:

Data from stats.allaboutfpl.com (Fully Free)

From GW27 to GW35, Brentford enter a fixture stretch designed for compound returns. This is the phase where assets don’t spike once, they accumulate.

Selling now:

  • Turns patience into panic
  • Converts planning into regret
  • Almost guarantees a buyback — at a higher price

Thiago isn’t a sprint asset. He’s a long-arc character, the kind who disappears in Act One and dominates Act Three.

Managers chasing weekly dopamine will miss that. Managers playing the long game won’t.

Verdict: HOLD.
Endure the setup. Enjoy the payoff.

Jurriën Timber (£6.4m) – DEF, Arsenal – 28.9% TSB

Timber, being the 2nd most sold defender this week, feels… rushed.

Arsenal:

  • Have the best clean-sheet odds in GW28 and GW30
  • Face Brighton in between, certainly a difficult fixture, but far from hostile
  • Still boasts the best defence in the league

Timber himself:

  • 2nd highest-scoring defender overall
  • Nailed when fit
  • Part of the most controlled defensive unit in the league

Top Defenders for Expected Goal Involvement this season:

There’s no structural reason to sell. Just impatience and impatience is expensive.

Verdict: HOLD.
Boring decisions are often the right ones.

FPL GW28 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Enzo Fernández (£6.8m) – MID, Chelsea – 20.9% TSB

This isn’t about one bad week. It’s about a trend you can no longer ignore.

Against Wolves, Leeds, and Burnley, Enzo has delivered:

  • Three straight blanks
  • Declining attacking threat:
    • xGI: 1.02 → 0.82 → 0.12

More importantly:

  • He is off penalties with Palmer back
  • His role has drifted deeper
  • His upside now relies on unlikely long shots or chaos goals
  • Chelsea’s difficult fixture run
Chelsea’s next 5 fixtures

At £6.8m, you are paying for hope, not probability. In a pressure phase of the season, hope is a luxury.

Verdict: SELL.
Dead money with no upside.

Trevoh Chalobah (£5.7m) – DEF, Chelsea – 22.4% TSB

Chelsea’s fixture run from GW21–27 was as good as it gets:
Fulham, Brentford, Palace, West Ham, Wolves, Leeds, Burnley.

The return?

  • 1 clean sheet
  • 27 points
  • 16 defenders outscored him in the same period

That was the dream run. This is the reckoning.

Next six:
Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Man City, Man United
(with an awkward Everton away thrown in for good measure)

If this was the output during Chelsea’s easiest stretch, you can imagine how thin the upside becomes when the fixtures turn hostile.

The warning signs were already there. Now the context removes any remaining doubt.

Verdict: SELL.
Too expensive to wait. Too exposed to trust.
