Top FPL GW23 Differential Picks to Target Ahead of Deadline

Our GW22 Differential Article had a poor week, with only 1 of our 6 picks returned with FPL Points. We are hoping to bounce back with our FPL GW23 Differential Picks.

  • Marcus Tavernier – 1 Goal – 8 Points

That makes it 53/132 picks that have returned FPL Points from our picks this Season.

In this article, we will be highlighting 4 players who are less than 10% Owned and 2 Ultra Differentials (less than 1% Owned) for all of you as of Thursday, 22nd January, 2026. There are many more whom you guys can consider if you decide not to go with the 6 players mentioned below.

Top FPL GW23 Differential Picks

Daniel Ballard – Sunderland – £4.6 Defender – 3.0 % TSB

  • Ballard has been a literal Colossus for Sunderland this season. He has already scored twice this season and got an Assist. He has had a whopping 9 Shots on Target (2nd best among Defenders) and 18 Shots in the Box (3rd best among Defenders).
  • He also has the Highest number of Big Chances among Defenders (7), which shows he has been really unlucky to only have scored 2 Goals. What heightens his appeal is that he faces a West Ham team that is ranked the worst for Headed attempts. This could be a big week for the Big Man.
  • Ballard is not just about attacking threat. He averages 10.92 Defensive Contributions per 90 mins and has got the additional 2 points in 9 of his 18 starts.
  • Sunderland have conceded the 3rd fewest Goals in the League (23) and have kept 7 Clean Sheets.
  • West Ham are also ranked in the Bottom 5 for Non-Penalty xG and could even be a good shoutout for a Clean Sheet for Sunderland this Gameweek.

Kevin Schade  – Brentford – £7.1 Midfielder – 2.8 % TSB

  • Schade was really unlucky not to have scored against Chelsea, and since his hat-trick against Bournemouth, he has only 2 Assists despite posting strong attacking stats. Since that game, he has had 3 Big Chances and 9 Shots in the Box, which proves that he has been unlucky not to have got any Goal. Over the last 6 Gameweeks, Schade also has the highest xGI in the League.
Schade has the most xGI amongst all players
over the last six games from stats.allaboutfpl.com
  • Over the season, Schade ranks 5th best for Shots on Target (20), best for Shots in the Box (37), and Big Chances (13) among Midfielders. He tends to perform much better at Home matches, too, with all 6 of his goals and 2 of his 4 Assists coming at home. Forest also rank in the Bottom 6 for Shots on Target conceded and Big Chances conceded.
  • Brentford also have lost only one game at home this season(vs Man City) and have scored 23 goals in home games(3rd highest in the League).

Harvey Barnes – Newcastle United – £6.1 Midfielder – 1.6 % TSB

  • Barnes is actually Newcastle’s Form Winger, having scored a brace against Leeds in Gameweek 21 and getting 15 Points. He was once again on the score sheet in Newcastle’s 3-0 over PSV in the midweek UCL game.
  • Despite only starting 10 games in the League, Barnes ranks 2nd best for Shots (31), Shots in the Box (24), Shots on Target (15), and Big Chances (9) among all Newcastle players this season.
  • This week, Barnes faces a Villa side that is depleted in midfield with the absences of McGinn, Kamara, and Onana. Villa tend to struggle defensively without Kamara. Barnes also loves playing against Villa, having scored 6 Goals and 6 Assists against them, which is the highest number of Goal contributions against any team historically. Barnes also tends to perform better at home, with 4 Goals at home this season.

Iliman Ndiaye – Everton – £6.2 Midfielder – 3.3 % TSB

  • Ndiaye has scored 4 Goals, got 2 Assists and averages close to 9.85 Defensive Contributions per 90 and has earned the additional 2 points, 4 times already. He is on penalties and, with the absence of Grealish, is now tasked as Everton’s main attacking threat. He should also now start on his favored left wing.
  • Despite going away to AFCON and missing 5 games, he still leads all Everton assets for Shots on Target (12). He has had 13 Shots in the Box, 3 Big Chances. He has played 16 key passes and created 5 Big Chances for his team-mates.
  • Leeds have also conceded the 3rd most Goals away from home (24), 3rd highest xG, 4th highest Non Penalty xG, and are ranked in the Bottom 5 for Shots on Target conceded.

Ultra Differential Picks for FPL GW23 (Under 1 % Ownership)

Thierno Barry – Everton – £5.7 Forward –  0.7 % TSB

  • Barry is slowly finding his groove in the League with 3 Goals in the last 4 Games. His minutes have also been increasing with all 4 starts resulting in 80+ minutes. Barry has had 7 Shots on Target, 21 Shots in the Box, and 9 Big Chances. Barry was unlucky not to get more returns after hitting the post and having a goal ruled out for offside.
  • Everton now face a good run of fixtures starting with Leeds at home, and with players like Ndiaye and KDH returning soon, Barry could be the focal point of a much smoother Everton attack in the future Gameweeks.

Brian Brobbey – Sunderland – £5.5 Forward –  0.7 % TSB

  • Brobbey has now established himself as Sunderland’s Starting striker and over the last 3 Gameweeks, has played more than 80+ minutes. Over that time, he has 2 Goals and 6 Bonus Points. He has 5 attacking returns in only 8 starts, and his stats seem to be improving with each Gameweek. He has 16 Shots in the Box and 7 Shots on Target so far this season.
  • Brobbey now has 2 appealing fixtures against West Ham & Burnley. Both teams rank in the Bottom 2 for all key defensive metrics. West Ham are the only team yet to keep a Clean Sheet at home this season and have conceded the most Goals at home (25 from 11 games). Burnley, meanwhile, have not yet kept a single clean sheet on the road and have conceded 27 Goals away from home

That’s it for Gameweek 23. We will be back with 6 More Differentials next Gameweek, where we will be hoping to get some positive returns from our current selected Differentials for Gameweek 23.
