Welcome to the FPL Gameweek 23 Captaincy metrics blog. We are back for Gameweek 23 after another below par Gameweek for the masses in Gameweek 22. Haaland and Semenyo face a resurgent Wolves away, while Thiago welcomes Nottingham Forest home, Gabriel and Bruno face each other at the Emirates. Without further ado, let’s get into it and see who tops the captaincy metrics this week.

Total metrics points: 14 + 4 + 18 + 26 + 10 + 32 + 16 + 26 + 4 + 26 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 28 + 4 + 26 + 32 + 4 + 4 + 8 + 12 + 4= 310 points

Note: “Returns” ~ player topping the metrics getting points returns and not necessarily the highest scoring option of the week.

FPL GW23 Captaincy Metrics

Erling Haaland, tops the captaincy poll for Gameweek 23 with 64% of the votes at the time of writing. Thiago finds himself in the second spot with 10% vote share. Semenyo who has joined City in the January window, finds himself in the third spot with 7% of vote share. Gabriel and Bruno, facing each other this GW, round up the Captaincy candidates for Gameweek 23.

Underlying Numbers of the FPL Gameweek 23 Captain Picks

Thiago tops the table with 17 shots in the box, 8 Big chances, and an xG of 3.92 in the last six games.

Haaland is 2nd with an xG of 3.59 in the last six games. He’s also had 8 big chances and 21 shots inside the box.

Bruno is 3rd with an xG of 2.09 in the last six games. He’s had 4 big chances and taken 12 shots inside the box during the period. He has also created 27 chances for his teammates, the most out of all 5 candidates.

Semenyo stands 4th with an xG of 1.43, amassing 7 shots inside the box and 2 big chances in total.

Finally, Gabriel stands last with an xG of 0.88 and 6 shots inside the box and 3 big chances.

Underlying numbers of Candidate’s teams

Brentford take the top spot and have registered 13.28 xG each in the last six games. Arsenal are second with 77 shots inside the box and 20 big chances during the period and an xG of 11.93, while Manchester United have had 64 shots inside the box and 23 big chances with an xG of 9.84, stand third.

For the first time of writing this article, Manchester City are last with 68 shots inside the box and 21 big chances during the period and an xG of 9.81.

Fixture Difficulty of the Candidate Team in FPL GW23

In the Third Phase of the Article, we look at the Fixture Difficulty of our 5 Candidates. 

We will use DraftHound’s odds for a Team scoring at least one goal in the Gameweek and the Odds of scoring more than 2.0 goals in the Gameweek as a whole.

Manchester City have 91% odds to get at least one goal and 50% odds to get 2 or more Goals this Gameweek vs Wolves (A).

Brentford are 3rd with 85% odds of at least 1 goal in this Gameweek vs Nottingham Forest (H) and 35% odds of scoring 2 or more goals.

Arsenal are 4th with 84% odds of at least 1 goal in this Gameweek vs Manchester United (H) and 33% odds of scoring 2 or more goals.

Lastly, Manchester United are 5th with 66% odds of at least 1 goal vs Arsenal (A) and 11% odds of scoring 2 or more goals.

Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 23 Captain Picks

In the fourth phase of the article, I used the Anytime Returns and Projected Points tools available at Fantasy Football Hub. With the help of the Anytime Returns Tool, I have derived the Safety Rank, which helps in determining the Safest Captaincy Option of the week, while I have used the Projected Points Tool to determine the Explosion Rank, which helps in determining the Most Explosive Option of the week. 

Haaland is first with an anytime returns projection of 83% and a 10.7 points projection in FPL Gameweek 22 vs Manchester United (A).

Gabriel is second and has an anytime returns projection of 59% and a 6.2 points projection , while Semenyo is third with anytime returns projection of 53% and a points projection of 6.4.

Thiago is fourth and has an anytime returns projection of 54% and a 5.7 points projection. Finally, Bruno is 5th and has an anytime returns projection of 44% and a points projection of 5.6 vs Arsenal (H).

Conclusion – Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 23 Captaincy metrics

In the Fifth and Final Phase of the article, I have aggregated the Ranks derived above to pull out the Cumulative Rank Factor (CRF). According to our captaincy metrics, the candidate with the lowest cumulative rank factor is the ideal captaincy option. 

Haaland tops the captaincy metrics with a cumulative rank factor of 8, Thiago is close second with a CRF of 9. Semenyo is 3rd with a CRF of 12, Gabriel is 4th with a CRF of 13, and Bruno is last with a CRF of 16.
