This was 2026’s first break from FPL — and thankfully, it wasn’t one of those soul-crushing pauses where nothing happens and managers start overthinking bench fodder. There was action, drama, and just enough chaos to keep the transfer buttons twitching. The standout story? Antoine Semenyo. In an era where forcing moves has become synonymous with sulking interviews or conveniently timed injuries, Semenyo chose dignity. He scored Bournemouth’s injury-time winner against Spurs on January 8, completed his move to Manchester City, and then — as if ticking off a checklist — scored, assisted, and walked away with Player of the Match on his first start on January 10. No noise. No mess. Just football. Respect. Elsewhere, the cup competitions quietly reshaped the FPL landscape. Conor Bradley’s season-ending injury all but nails Jeremie Frimpong as Liverpool’s first-choice right-back, instantly pushing him into relevance. AFCON, meanwhile, is in full swing — and it’s surprisingly good news for Manchester United managers, with both Mbeumo and Amad knocked out over the weekend and set to return in time for the GW22 Manchester derby. Squad availability is shifting, minutes are starting to stabilise, and this is exactly the point in the season where planning matters more than punting.
So, let’s start with our BUY-HOLD-SELL article for this GW, sponsored by …. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want 😊

FPL Gameweek 22 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY
PS – I am assuming everyone has Haaland in their teams. If not, he is your priority buy
Bruno Guimarães (£7.2m) – MID, Newcastle – 21.7% TSB
10, 10, 11.
That’s Bruno’s points tally across his last three Gameweeks — 31 points in total. Only Haaland has managed to outscore that across any three-GW stretch this season (and he’s done it twice). This is the very definition of a purple patch.
Up next are bottom-placed Wolves. Yes, Rob Edwards’ side have shown signs of life — a three-game unbeaten run in the league and a 6–1 FA Cup win — but Newcastle at home is a different problem altogether. If Eddie Howe’s men are to dominate, Bruno will be at the heart of it. He is Newcastle’s top FPL scorer and has accumulated 1.5x the points of his next best teammate, Woltemade.

Verdict: Form, fixtures, and centrality all align. Bruno isn’t just ticking — he’s driving everything Newcastle do. This is a BUY.

Florian Wirtz (£8.2m) – MID, Liverpool – 10.8% TSB
Liverpool face Burnley in GW22 — a team sitting in the bottom two for almost every defensive metric. Timing matters, and Wirtz’s timing couldn’t be better.

After a slow adaptation period, Wirtz finally looks settled in the Premier League, with three goal contributions across the last five Gameweeks. With Salah and Isak unavailable, Wirtz is not just likely to start — he’s central to how Liverpool progress the ball and create chances.

Verdict: A nailed starter in a high-ceiling fixture, finding rhythm at exactly the right moment. Wirtz is a calculated, upside-driven BUY.

FPL GW22 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD
Phil Foden (£8.7m) – MID, Man Utd – 33.8% TSB
Foden is currently the most transferred-out player of the Gameweek — which makes this the perfect moment to pause and ask why.

Manchester United are in turmoil. Amorim is gone. Under caretaker manager Fletcher, they are winless, including a limp FA Cup exit, and have managed just one win in their last seven matches across all competitions. And here’s more data on why it is a problem to sell Foden now: his record against United is ridiculous.
Foden has scored seven goals in his last seven league appearances against them, including a 12-point haul the last time these sides met. After United, City face Wolves — a fixture that screams attacking returns.
Verdict: This is not the time to sell pedigree for panic. Foden thrives in chaos — especially United’s. HOLD.

Hugo Ekitiké (£8.9m) – FWD, Liverpool – 25.9% TSB
If Ekitiké was a HOLD last week, he is an even stronger HOLD this week — despite being the second most transferred-out player after Foden.
Between GW15–GW19, among all forwards, Ekitiké ranked 1st for:
- Shots
- Shots in the Box
- Goals Scored
- Goal Involvements
- xGI
- xA
- xPts
- BPS
- Bonus
- Total FPL Points
Then came the hamstring issue. He missed the fixtures against Fulham and Arsenal, and Liverpool — coincidentally — failed to win either game, lacking their primary threat in the final third. Predictably, panic followed, and managers rushed to sell.
The comeback, however, was immediate and emphatic. Against Barnsley in the FA Cup, Ekitiké returned from the bench to score and assist, reminding everyone exactly what they’d been selling.
Now he faces Burnley at home — a defence ranked:
- 20th for Shots Conceded
- 20th for Shots in the Box Conceded
- 20th for Shots on Target Conceded
- 20th for NPxGC
- 20th for xGC
- 20th for xCS
This isn’t just a fixture to survive — it’s a fixture to attack.
Verdict: Ekitiké remains a HOLD. And if you’re feeling brave, he’s also a legitimate differential captain for GW22.

FPL Gameweek 22 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL
Rúben Dias (£5.6m) – DEF, Man City – 5.0% TSB
There isn’t much to unpack here. Pep Guardiola has already done that for us.
Rúben Dias is looking at four to six weeks on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury against Chelsea. In FPL terms, that’s not a short absence, it’s a complete write-off — especially for a defender priced at a premium.
No minutes in the near future, no defined return window, and no reason to park that much budget on your bench while fixtures pile up.
Verdict: This is a simple exit. Free up the funds and move on.

Mo Kudus (£6.4m) – MID, Spurs – 11.8% TSB
Tottenham’s injury crisis continues to deepen, and Kudus is the latest casualty. Scans have confirmed a significant thigh injury picked up against Sunderland, with reports suggesting he won’t return until after the March internationals — effectively ruling him out until April.
At this stage of the season, benching that much money for that long simply isn’t viable. Even when fit, minutes and rhythm will be question marks in a Spurs side already stretched thin.Verdict: Long-term injury plus uncertainty equals an easy SELL.
