Welcome to our FPL GW19 Scout Picks blog! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas period and, more importantly, a successful GW18. Our Scout Picks team picked up a score of just 40 points in FPL GW18 with both Grealish and Timber absent and Haaland blanking… The Official Scout Picks did even worse however, scoring just 35 – what a horror show!
Our victory takes us 4 points clear of the Official Scout Picks with a current score of 11-7 in our favour!

FPL GW19 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

Lammens (5.0m) comes into the team for United’s attractive fixture against Wolves in FPL GW19. Wolves have scored 3 goals in their last 5 fixtures and reached over 1xG on just 2 occasions. This lack of goal scoring is by no means a temporary dip in form as Wolves rank bottom of the league for both goals and expected goals this season as well.
United on the other hand are a bit patchy at the moment, having won 2, drawn 2 and lost 1 of their previous five games in the league. Their victory against Newcastle on boxing day was unconvincing, and it remains to be seen whether the 4-4-2 they trialed in that game will become a permanent fixture or just a temporary fix. The 1-0 victory against Newcastle was United’s first clean sheet since 4th October, but we’re hopeful that the Red Devils will be able to make it 2 clean sheets in 2 matches against the worst side in the league.
Let me go into more detail as to why we’ve gone for the United GK in the following section, as we’re so confident in their ability to keep a CS that we’ve actually doubled up on United defense!

FPL GW19 Scout Picks – Defenders

Virgil, (5.9m) Hall (5.2m) and Dorgu (4.1m) make up the back three for FPL GW19…
Dorgu joins Lammens in the defense following a huge 17 point haul against Newcastle in FPL GW18. Fantasy PL managers are nothing if not reactive, so we are following the trend by putting Dorgu in after he scored lots of points – it worked last week with KLP right guys?… Anyway, Dorgu is easily the best United defensive asset going into this fixture against Wolves as there is a possibility he plays in a more advanced right wing position as he did against Newcastle. If he does so, he offers huge attacking potential, as demonstrated by his goal in GW18!

United have conceded the 6th most goals in the league at this stage, and also rank near the bottom of the division for expected goals against, so why are we targeting them this week? Well, in the reverse fixture, United managed to limit Wolves to just 0.26xG and 4 shots in the box, Wolves did score in that game, but they were prevented from creating too many chances. This match happened only a few weeks ago at the start of December, and with Home advantage United will surely be confident of repeating the trick. Wolves remain the worst attacking side in the league by some distance – it’s important to continue targeting them from a defensive perspective.
Van Dijk replaces Frimpong in the backline after the latter scored a decent 5 points in last week’s Scout Picks side. Connor Bradley replaced Chiesa around the 60 minute mark in Liverpool’s match against Wolves in GW18, with Frimpong pushing higher up the pitch and finishing the game as a RW. This may sound great from an FPL perspective, but with Szobo returning from suspension and Gakpo also making a return from injury, it’s fairly touch and go as to whether Frimpong starts this match against Leeds. For all of those reasons we’re going for the safe (/boring) option of VVD.
Van Dijk is averaging 0.89 defensive contribution points per 90 so far this season, second only to Konate in the Liverpool squad. The dutchman is far less likely to be substitued than Konate however, and averages more shots and shots on target per 90, as well as scoring higher on the BonusPoints System used in FPL. Ibou is a decent option if you’re on a tight budget, but otherwise I’d go for Virgil. Liverpool are finally putting some decent performances together, and while Leeds are a side in form, they may struggle against an in-form Liverpool side at home.
Finally we have Hall. Newcastle face Burnley away from home in FPL GW19 which presents the perfect opportunity to ‘hop on’ to their assets. The Magpies face all of Burnley, Leeds and Wolves in their next four matches, so now is certainly the time to target their players!

Their form has been patchy, but the attack looks like it’s finally starting to click with a settled front three of Gordon, Woltemade and Murphy. Hall offers fantastic attacking upside and will certainly be an outlet on the left hand side for Newcastle. Burnley have scored the joint 4th fewest goals and have the 3rd lowest xG in the league. Now is the time to load up on Geordies!

FPL GW19 Scout Picks – Midfielders

Neto (7.3m), Cunha (8.1m), Minteh (6.0m) and Wirtz (8.1m) come into the midfield for FPL GW19…
Wirtz is the only midfielder to keep his place in the team following a stunning performance against Wolves in FPL GW18. 3 chances created, 2 shots, 1 goal and 3 bonus points produced a huge 10 point haul for the german midfielder. With Gakpo returning from injury, Szobo returning from suspension and Frimpong and Bradley competing for the RB spot, there are some concerns that Wirtz may be dropped for this match but I think it’s likely he keeps his spot thanks to his awesome form. Szobo is probably a better long term pick (expected minutes wise) but for now Wirtz is the best LFC midfield asset.

Cunha comes into the fray with United facing bottom of the league Wolves this GW. Cunha is United’s most nailed attacker and is therefore the one to target. Cunha’s 0.47xGI/90 is not outrageous, especially considering his price tag, but with Bruno out injured and Mbeumo at AFCON, Cunha is certainly the best option this week. 3 shots and 1 chance created against Newcastle makes for good reading for Cunha owners, hopefully he can continue that form into the match against his former team Wolves!
📈🔥Cunha Stats & Attack Rank among Mids over the last 4 GWs:
- Shots- 25 (1st)
- Shots on Target- 9 (1st)
- Shots inside the box- 14 (1st)
- Big Chances- 4 (2nd)
- xG- 2.49 (2nd)
- xGI- 3.2 (2nd)
STAT: Wolves have conceded 2+ goals in all of their last 4 fixtures and rank bottom of the league for both goals against and expected goals against.
Minteh returns to the Scout Picks team for the first time in a while after a game changing performance in the second half against Arsenal. Minteh forced a huge save from Raya mid-way through the second half and caused numerous problems for the Arsenal defense after coming on at half time – he has certainly earned a starting spot for the away trip to West Ham in FPL GW19.
The Gambian has scored 1 goal and produced 4 assists so far this season, and is averaging 0.4xGI/90. He is slightly under performing his underlying numbers thus far, but that should not be a cause for concern this early into the campaign. In the reverse fixture against West Ham, a 1-1 draw, Brighton should have come away with the win but were denied 3 points by some poor finishing. Minteh had been in a bit of poor form going into the Arsenal game and was dropped (likely for tactical reasons) only to come in and change the game. He will be hoping to build on that performance, and a fixture against the side with the 2nd most goals conceded and the 2nd worst xGA presents the perfect opportunity!
Finally we have Chelsea’s Neto. Palmer’s return from injury has prompted many in the FPL community to consider targeting not only the english-man but also his attacking teammates, with other popular premium midfield options injured or unavailable due to AFCON. Palmer put in a decent performance against Villa in GW18, taking three shots, and he was unlucky to come away empty handed. My worry with Palmer is that his recent return from injury may put restraints on his minutes, and in a congested festive schedule he may be dropped and or struggle to get back to full fitness. Therefore we’re looking elsewhere in the Chelsea team to attack their fixture against an out-of-sorts bournemouth side…
STAT: Bournemouth are winless since the end of October.
Neto presents himself as the best option for a number of reasons. While rotation is a concern (considering the schedule), Neto has played 90 minutes in all of Chelsea’s last four premier league games, highlighting his importance to this side. His 5 goals and 3 assists puts him second in the Chelsea squad for goal involvements, while his 0.42xGI/90 suggests his numbers are repeatable. Bournemouth’s defensive stats recently are concerning, so we’re targeting them as Chelsea will look to make a statement following their disapointing defeat to Villa in GW18.

FPL GW19 Scout Picks – Forwards

Our front three stays the same. Woltemade (7.4m), Haaland (15.1m) and Ekitike (9.1m) complete the team…
Haaland regains the captaincy following Ekitike’s brief stint as captain in GW18. His blank last week makes it 6 blanks in 18 matches thus far and he remains top of the scoring leaderboard with 19 goals. Haaland had, by his standards, a poor game against forest, taking just 2 shots and creating 1 chance for his team in that match. The big number 9 will surely be keen to end his scoring drought of 1 game against Sunderland in FPL GW19, and we are certainly backing him to do so!
Ekitike is also on a one game scoring drought, but did managed to pick up an assist against Wolves, making it 6 goal involvements in his last 4 matches in the league. The frenchman had a decent game against Wolves, taking 4 shots, hitting the post once and creating the chance which Wirtz converted in the 42nd minute of the game.
With Isak still out injured Ekitike remains Liverpool’s only fit striker and thus will keep his place in the team for the foreseeable future. Leeds have decent underlying defensive numbers, but with the form he’s in at the moment it would be brave to bet against Hugo in this one.
Woltemade also keeps his place in the team in spite of a sub-par performance in GW18. Big Nick was substitued after 68 minutes having had 0 shots and 0 chances created, so will be looking to bounce back when his side faces Burnley in FPL GW19. With Wissa now looking to push Woltemade for a starting spot in the team he’ll need to start performing soon, and a fixture against one of the most porous sides in the division is the perfect opportunity.
STAT: Burnley rank bottom of the league for xGA and bottom for goals against.
