FPL GW16 Scout Picks Based on Stats, Analysis and Matchups

Welcome to our FPL GW16 Scout Picks blog! No you’re not dreaming, you really do have five extra free transfers to use going into FPL GW16 thanks to AFCON. Use them wisely, I know most won’t…

Our Scout Picks returned a respectable 58 points in FPL GW15, 9 short of the Official Scout Picks total of 67. A decent haul, but a dissapointing result in comparison… Let’s right our wrongs in FPL GW16 by getting back to winning ways! We go into this weekend with a 9-6 lead in our favour.

FPL GW16 Scout Picks – Goalkeeper

Sanchez (4.9m) finds himself back in our Scout Picks team for the first time in a while as Chelsea face Everton this weekend in FPL GW16. Sanchez is the fifth highest scoring GK in the game so far this season and is firmly in the conversation for top spot at this early stage, sitting just 9 points away from Raya at number 1. Chelsea have a decent defensive record in the league having conceded the third fewest goals and the fourth lowest xGA so look like one to target going forwards.

Everton on the other hand have scored just 18 goals thus far, putting them in joint 16th place for goals scored at this stage. Their xG suggests they’ve been a bit unlucky to not have scored more, but this fixture looks like one to target for the weekend. KDH is in decent form, but otherwise the Toffees look fairly blunt. Against Forest in FPL GW16 they scored 3 goals from just 1.25xG – don’t let the scoreline fool you! Sanchez is definitely one to keep an eye on moving forwards and looks like a decent option for FPL GW16.

FPL GW16 Scout Picks – Defenders

We’ve gone for a back three of Kayode (4.5m), Hincapie (5.4m) and Lewis-Skelly (5.1m)…

Let’s start with the Arsenal duo. With Gabriel out long term, Saliba only just coming back from injury, Califiori suspended and Timber missing out on Arsenal’s Champions League game due to a knock, Hincapie and MLS are some of the only remaining Arsenal defensive options! Raya is a good shout too, but we’ve instead decided to go for the more interesting options of Hincapie and MLS.

Arsenal Injury FPL

Of course such turmoil and change in Arsenal’s defensive line will likely render them somewhat less solid than they have been so far this season, but not so much to put me off doubling up for a home fixture against bottom of the table Wolves. Wolves remain winless having scored just 8 goals from about 12xG in their 15 matches so far and have scored just 1 goal in their last 6 games. MLS will offer some much needed attacking flair to the backline, while Hincapie is likely to rack up DC points from the centre of defense.

Kayode comes back into the Scout Picks team, joining the Arsenal duo for FPL GW16. I am a big Kayode fan. I backed Munoz a long time before he became a popular FPL pick (pretty much as soon as he signed for the club), and I have a similar feeling about Kayode. Don’t just trust my instinct though, let’s look at the stats…

While the italian is averaging just 0.11xA/90 so far this campaign, last season’s xGI/90 of 0.20 is far more promising. Looking even further back, in his final season in Italy, the right back averaged 0.28xGI/90! Kayode loves to get forwards, and in certain games is being given the license to do so – it’s likely that Leeds will be one of those. Kayode’s most attacking performance thus far came against West Ham, with new manager Andrews altering his normally pragmatic and conservative approach when facing weak opposition.

Collins is perhaps a safer pick, as he tends to score highly for DefCon (though I’d like to point out that Kayode’s last three Defcon totals were 9, 8 and 9!), but we’re backing the more exciting Kayode for this one! Leeds have scored 0.86 goals per 90 away from home as well as having the third lowest xG and joint 4th fewest goals scored.

FPL GW16 Scout Picks – Midfielders

Bruno Fernandes(9.1m), Outtara (6.0m), Rogers (7.0m) and Saka (10.2m) make up our midfield four for FPL GW16…

Bruno is the only midfielder to keep his place from last weeks team after the portuguese star delivered a stunning 18 point haul in FPL GW15. 2 goals, 1 assist and 3 bonus points in just a single gameweek, not bad! Those goal contributions propelled him into the top spot for points scored amongst midfielders, overtaking the likes of Foden, Semenyo and Rice. That’s now 6 goal contributions in his last 5 premier league matches (and 6 bonus points!). Bruno’s in great form at the moment, so we’re sticking with him for this weekends fixture against Bournemouth.

Bruno Fernandes

Outtara comes in for Brentford’s attractive fixture against Leeds United this weekend. Schade is suspended for this clash, meaning that Outtara is pretty nailed on to start either alongside Thiago in a front two, or on the wing in a front three. Outtara’s 0.52xGI/90 is the second highest in the Brentford team only behind the aforementioned Thiago!

The issue for Brentford’s summer signing has been minutes, with Outtara only starting to get consistent minutes for the Bees from FPL GW8 onwards. Schade’s suspension guarentees him minutes for this weekends match against Leeds. Brentfords opponent for this weekend is a Leeds United side that have conceded the third most goals (29), and whose record is particularly dire away from home.

FPL Differentials

Rogers comes back into the team for this one with Villa facing West Ham away in FPL GW16. This pick is to target the fixture more than anything else as Rogers’ numbers haven’t been great since his haul in FPL GW12 against Leeds. West Ham are very leaky, and, with Villa in such great form, it makes sense to include at least one attacker from them in the team this weekend. Rogers is a nailed 90′ minute man at the moment for Villa, and, though his underlying numbers are lower this year, has the ability to play a magic pass or score from range in any game. Rogers comes in for FPL GW16.

Saka has managed to wrestle the captains armband off Haaland for this one, let me explain why. Wolves are third bottom for xGA, bottom for goals conceded and have conceded 11 goals in their last 5 matches. Manchester United, a side that had pretty mid-table attacking stats, now sit 2nd for xG and 3rd for goals scored thanks to their fixture against Wolves on monday night (4 goals and 4xG). Arsenal, on the other hand, are playing this one off the back of a comfortable 0-3 win against Brugge in the champions league. Saka came on at 71′ in that match, hinting that he will likely start (and finish) the game against Wolves this weekend. Saka has the best underlying stats in the squad, is the joint top scorer for Arsenal and, as mentioned, is nailed; he’s a great captaincy choice for this weekend.

FPL GW16 Scout Picks – Forwards

A front three of Thiago (7.0m), Haaland (15.0m) and Raul Jiminez (6.2m) finish off the team…

Haaland loses the captaincy but not his spot in the team for FPL GW16… As much as one can appreciated Palace’s stability and effectiveness this season, it would be remiss of us not to include the Robot himself for this one. Yes Palace have the third best GA record, yes they have decent xGA, but Haaland’s EO and recent record make him a must-have at this point. Munoz’ absence will be keenly felt by Glasner’s Eagles, and, while I expect them to put up a good fight, Haaland’s in such great form that we just had to include him.

Thaigo has the joint 2nd highest big chances in the league this season

Thiago also keeps his place in the team as Brentford welcome Leeds at home in FPL GW16. Brentford are looking more and more comfortable every week as the likes of Thiago, Collins & Kelleher all begin to hit their stride. Thiago has been a revelation this season, coming in for Wissa and scoring 11 goals so far this year. The Brazilian is the second highest scorer in the league at this stage, blowing the likes of Mateta, Semenyo and Woltemade out of the water with his double digit goal tally.

The underlying stats suggest that this form is no fluke; 0.83 xG/90 makes for very good reading! Thiago has 5 goals in his last 5 games (but 0 in his last 2), making him the perfect forward to target going into this attractive fixture against Leeds. It’s a great idea to target Thiago now as Brentford face Wolves in FPL GW17.

Finally we have Fulham’s Raul Jiminez. There was some debate about whether to include Wilson or Jiminez in this team, but we’ve gone for Raul for a number of reasons. Wilson’s recent form is impressive, but almost all of his goals have been ‘worldies’, something he is unlikely to be able to replicate on a regular basis. Wilson is known for scoring amazing goals, particularly free kicks, but not every week. The welshman’s underlying numbers, even in recent games, suggest that this form is unsustainable, and for that reason we’ve gone for Raul Jiminez, who looks like a better long-term option.

Jiminez is averaging 0.46xGI/90 thus far, not great, but not terrible, for a forward in FPL. Sam Chuckweze would be a great option, as he’s in fine form and has exceptional underlying numbers, but his minutes are nowhere near secure at this point, so he’s probably one to avoid for now. Jiminez has 3 goal involvements in his last 6 games, only 2 fewer than Wilson over the same period of games. Both are good options, but we’ve gone for Jiminez for our FPL GW16 Scout Picks team.
