FPL GW18 Review

Like most of you reading this, I had a poor Gameweek where I only managed to score 40 points. The moves I made did not do as well as I would have liked, as Ekitike (transferred in)only managed to match Thiago (transferred out), and Cunha (transferred in for Bruno Fernandes) also blanked vs Newcastle on Friday. 1 clean sheet, 2 assists, and a goal is all that my team could muster this week, and I am so glad that there is a short turnaround to GW19. While Dubravka scored 11 points on the bench, there is no way I was starting him over Raya against Brighton at Home. No regrets there.
As a result, I fell from 82,753 in the world to 114,686. This could have been even more brutal, but I think I got away with one here, after managing a Gameweek rank of just 8,281,234 (my worst all season). Overall, the team does not look as great anymore, and there are some issues that need sorting out in the next few Gameweeks…
FPL GW19 Team Reveal

I am carrying 2 FT and 0.0 in the bank going into Gameweek 19. The team, on the face of it, looks fine, but there are some concerns which I will be talking about here…
- Lack of a Bench – The bench is now paper-thin after Joe Rodon was taken off due to an ankle injury. Farke’s comments after the match were not very encouraging.
“Not good. Joe is my warrior. He has played so many games in a row, and of course, he wanted to stay on the pitch, but he got a hit on his ankle, and by doing this, I think he also rolled his ankle. It’s pretty swollen at the moment, I doubt that he will be available for Liverpool, and also for the upcoming games before the FA Cup. So, we have to wait for some further assessment. But right now, straight after the game, it doesn’t look too good.” – Daniel Farke on Joe Rodon
This leaves just Potts on the bench, who is a starter but usually only good for a 2-pointer. The bench is suffering and needs fixing soon.
- Issues in the Defence – The defence looks very unideal now. Van Dijk cannot buy a clean sheet for his life and has also stopped getting DefCons (averaging less than 7 in the last 3 games) and is yet to score a goal this season. Hincapie’s time might be up soon, as Gabriel returned over the weekend and should replace him at Centre Back now. Hincapie is probably fine this week, though, as Calafiori also seems to be carrying an injury and was pulled out of the team in the warm-up against Brighton.
“Yesterday, we lost Jurrien. Today, we lose Calafiori in the warm-up. With Jurrien, he landed awkwardly, and there’s something with Ricci as well, very, very strange. It’s something that [Calafiori] felt yesterday, something very awkward that happened, and today in the warm-up, he wasn’t comfortable.” – Mikel Arteta
If Calafiori is out again this week, then I would expect Hincapie to slot in at LB. We could wait for more news, but with Arteta, we are hardly going to get anything.
Further, Rodon’s injury seems to be an issue as mentioned above, and Andersen also has some tricky fixtures coming up, which is not ideal for the run-in. Will have to focus on the defence a bit after GW19.
FPL GW19 Transfer Plans
With all this in mind, I feel it is critical to make the correct moves that work long term, as there are a number of tricky positions that need to be navigated in the coming weeks.
Going from top to bottom, the GK and Defence look fine to me this Gameweek, while for GW20, I will probably be looking at Gabriel and an Everton/Newcastle defender for Van Dijk.
Upfront, I am happy to have Haaland and Ekitike. In the midfield too, I am most happy about what I have, although Semenyo needs to leave soon. He has done exactly what I hoped he would do before I got him in GW17, scoring 19 points. And with all the speculation of him leaving for Manchester City in January and some really tricky fixtures coming up – Chelsea (A), Arsenal (H), Tottenham (Home), Brighton (Away) – I feel it is the time to hop off.
There are a few replacements that are worth exploring, but I am set on bringing in Anthony Gordon (7.4) this GW. The fixtures look really solid – Burnley (A), Crystal Palace (H), Leeds United (H), Wolves (A), and Aston Villa (H). I believe this is the most ideal entry-point in Newcastle assets. There may be some concerns with his minutes, but he completed 90 minutes against Manchester United, and his manager was particularly pleased with his performance.
I thought Lewis (Hall) and Anthony [Gordon] down the left-hand side played really well today, and together with Louis Miley on the opposite side, who again I thought was outstanding, probably our three strongest players.” – Eddie Howe
Semenyo to Gordon would be my only move this GW at the moment. Although if Hincapie looks like a doubt to start, I could move him as well. Watch this space.
