FPL GW 1 Captain Picks ahead of GW 1 Deadline | ALLABOUTFPL

FPL is back and the GW1 deadline is just a few hours away. As always the excitement is building up towards the new FPL season with managers almost locking in their squads already. But captaincy has always been an area of discussion with a lot of managers Confused about who to give the armband for the first GW of this season? Auba? Salah? Werner? Kane? Look no further than this piece, where we cover Top 5 Captaincy choices for FPL GW 1 including a differential captain choice.

Reminder the GW1 Deadline is now 90 minutes before the first game and not 60 minutes like previous seasons. Get your team and captain sorted early.

FPL GW 1 Captaincy Poll:

Salah or Auba👀

Safest FPL GW 1 Captain choice – Aubameyang(12.0) or Salah(12.0)?

FPL GW 1 Captain pick: Auba & Salah
Will it be Auba or Salah?

From the results of the poll and looks of the ownership, it looks like a two-horse race for the captaincy pick for FPL GW 1. Salah(31.1%) and Aubameyang(47.1% TSB) seems to be the safest options for GW1. But, who is a better choice and is more likely to score?

Salah vs Aubameyang( Post Project restart GW30- GW38):

Without looking at the stats and numbers, it looks like Aubameyang had a great end to the season and Salah was missing the easiest of chances and was underscoring very much. But the stats below confirm that both were equally good in terms of FPL perspective and little to separate them.

Aubameyang vs Salah(post restart)

  • Minutes: 833/638
  • Goals: 5/3
  • Assists: 2/4
  • Shots: 28/34
  • Big Chances: 7/9
  • Points: 53/47

But the underlying truth is that Salah should have converted few more big chances and should have had more points. Salah under performed his xG(5.68) with 3 goals, got 47 point s with xPts of 54.3.

Whom are Salah and Aubameyang Playing?

Both of them are up against promoted sides and very much fancy scoring goals. But another thing to be noted is Salah is at home to Leeds, whereas Aubameyang is away to Fulham. Here, Salah edges out Aubameyang easily.

Salah home vs Aubameyang Away stats(GW30-GW 38):

  • Points per game started- 6.0/2.0
  • Goals- 1/0
  • Assists- 3/0
  • xG- 2.5/1.8
  • Shots per 90- 3.75/3.0
  • Big chances- 4/2

Author’s FPL GW 1 Captain Pick:

Your GW1 captain should definitely be between Salah and Aubameyang. It is also good to play safe and not take too many risks in captain at the earliest. I would go with Salah. Yes- Salah looked rusty towards the season end and was poor in Community Shield. But that was partially due to the fact that Trent didn’t start on the right. Also, Salah has a great track record of scoring in the opening week of the season.

Other Captain choices for FPL GW 1:

Timo Werner vs Brighton(A)

FPL GW 1 Captain pick: Timo Werner
Timo could get going come GW 1 against Brighton

One cannot score an incredible 28 goals and have 8 assists unless you’re a TOP TOP striker. Timo Werner was simply on another level last season and was on par with some of the best european strikers last season. Timo Werner(£9.5 Mil) is the second-highest owned player in FPL currently with 48% managers owning the Chelsea forward.

Timo is also a striker who loves to shot having had averaged an eye-watering 3.8 shot on goal per 90 and 1.9 shots on target per 90, One in two shots being on target proving that he’s an elite finisher. Werner also completely outperforms other PL forwards for NPxG, Big chances per 90 and Key passes per 90.

Timo had a Goal involvement percentage of (44.4%) only Vardy (44.8%) had more. Werner scored in the friendly against Brighton and was on the score sheet against Spain on international duty. Timo will be motivated and highly determined to score a couple for Chelsea on debut come FPL GW 1.

Harry Kane vs Everton(H)

Kane began the 2019/20 season with a monster haul of 13 points and we can expect a similar return💥

Harry Kane is fit and injury-free and we all know how dangerous the spurs forward can be having been a great FPL asset all these years. Kane enjoyed a brilliant end to the season post restart scoring 7 goals in nine games, only sterling(9) and Antonio(8) scoring more post restart. 54 points post restart isn’t bad either. The spurs forward ended the campaign with 18 goals which aren’t bad. But that’s certainly not KANE levels and he’ll be looking to correct the same fact and will be gunning for the Golden boot this season. Kane loves to score against Everton and has scored 9 goals against them in 10 games and will look to continue the trend-making him a great GW 1 Captain option.

Differential captain choice for FPL GW 1:

Jamie Vardy vs West Brom(A)

FPL GW 1 Captain: Jamie Vardy
Vardy could be back in the goals for leicester!

It is actually quite surprising that last season’s Golden Boot winner(23 goals) would be a differential captain pick owned by just 17% of managers. Vardy in fact had the most big chances(36) last season. The Leicester forward finished last season as the top goal scorer picking up the golden boot with 23 goals and 7 assists. This inevitably also saw him finish with the most points from the forwards and fourth highest in FPL with 210 points.

Vardy along with aguero are the only strikers with a G/SoT of more than 50% re confirming his elite level of finishing. He’s also had the highest goal involvement percentage of 44.8% amongst all premium forwards and even timo werner proving he’s the talisman for leicester.

Even though only 6 goals came in the final 19 games of the season which was partly due to injuries and Leicester performing badly on the whole, Vardy and Leicester are up against a promoted team and Vardy could be amongst the goals against west from at the hawthorns.
